Site clearing has begun for the construction of a new 400-bed maternity block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital as part of efforts to expand and modernise maternal and neonatal healthcare services.
The project follows a commitment by President John Dramani Mahama on July 9, 2026, during the commissioning of a CathLab at the hospital, to construct a new maternity facility to replace the existing block.
According to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, a site has since been allocated and formally handed over to the contractor, with preparatory clearing works now underway.
The new facility is expected to be equipped with modern medical technology and purpose-built infrastructure to provide comprehensive and specialised care for women and newborns.
It will include obstetrics and gynaecology wards, labour and delivery suites, operating theatres, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, High Dependency Unit and Intensive Care Unit.
The facility will also house an In Vitro Fertilisation and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, antenatal and postnatal clinics, fertility and reproductive health clinics, breastfeeding and family planning units, as well as an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit.
Other planned facilities include a Diagnostic Imaging Department, laboratory and blood bank facilities, a Pharmacy Department, Central Sterile Services Department, physiotherapy and rehabilitation units, and teaching, research and conference facilities.
Korle Bu says the new maternity block, when completed, will significantly increase its capacity to provide advanced maternal, reproductive and neonatal healthcare.
The project is also expected to improve clinical training and research while providing patients and healthcare professionals with a safer and more modern environment.
Management of the hospital has expressed appreciation to President Mahama and the government for the investment, describing the project as a major step towards strengthening maternal and neonatal healthcare infrastructure.
The hospital is hopeful that the new facility will further enhance its position as a leading centre for maternal and neonatal healthcare in Ghana.
