Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has held separate engagements with three prominent international figures on Africa’s development, regional integration and security challenges on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The Minister met UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa, Ahunna Eziakonwa; President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Crisis Group, Dr Comfort Ero; and European Union Special Representative for the Sahel, Birgitte Markussen.
According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the discussions focused on key issues affecting the African continent, including reparatory justice, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), regional integration and conflict resolution.
The engagements also touched on the Accra Reset Agenda for Health and Resource Sovereignty, which seeks to advance Africa-led approaches to health and the management of the continent’s resources.
The Minister and the three officials further discussed the growing threat of violent extremism, particularly in the Sahel, and the need for sustainable solutions to conflicts affecting the region.
Another key issue was President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for Ghana’s chairmanship of the African Union (AU) in 2027.
The discussions explored ways Ghana could build closer partnerships with the respective organisations to support the President’s agenda for the AU and advance shared priorities on the continent.
The engagements formed part of Ghana’s diplomatic activities on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York.
