Dangote praises Mahama for Ghana’s economic turnaround, says ‘money follows trust’

African business magnate and President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for Ghana’s economic turnaround, attributing the improvement largely to renewed confidence in the country.

Speaking at the “Accra Reset: Full Circle – Making Global Development Work Again” event in New York on Monday, September 21, Mr Dangote said Ghana’s experience demonstrated the strong link between investor confidence and the flow of capital.

According to him, investors are more willing to commit resources when they have confidence in a country’s leadership and economic direction.

“This has actually shown that money follows trust,” Mr Dangote said.

He also commended President Mahama for what he described as a rapid turnaround of Ghana’s economy, saying the improvement did not result from extraordinary measures but from taking what he considered the right decisions.

“President Mahama turned around the economy of Ghana in a very short time. It wasn’t a very good case, but when he came in, he didn’t do any magic, but he did the right things,” he said.

Mr Dangote further linked the recovery to the confidence investors have placed in the President’s leadership, arguing that restored trust has helped improve Ghana’s investment outlook.

His comments come as the Mahama administration continues to highlight economic stabilisation and investor confidence as key components of its Resetting Ghana Agenda.

The government has pointed to developments including declining inflation, currency appreciation, improved fiscal performance and stronger reserves as indicators of the economy’s recovery.

The remarks were made on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly during the Accra Reset programme, which is focused on discussions around global development and Africa’s economic and social priorities.
