You cannot win the election with tribalism – Bawumia tells Mahama

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has described as divisive comments by former President Mahama describing President Akufo-Addo and his fellow tribesmen in government as “Akyem Sakawa Boys”.

Mahama endorsed a disparaging and tribal-laced article by repeating the article on his official facebook and highlighting the disparaging portion.

The former President has since come under attack, with many describing his comments as unpresidential.

Addressing a durbar of Chiefs and people of Gushegu on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia expressed surprise and disgust at the former President’s comments, saying Ghana is a united country which has moved beyond the kind of divisive, and tribal politics by the former President.

“The recent utterances of John Mahama referring to Akyem Sakawa boys. How do you take a whole tribe and say they are sakawa. How do you do that?,” Dr. Bawumia said.

The Vice President noted that the person former President Mahama directed his disparaging ethnic attacks to, President Akufo-Addo, is one who is widely acknowledged as a champion of peace, having played a significant role in the resolution of the Dagbon crisis.

“The Paramount Chief of Gushegu, Gushe-Naa, Abdulai Shitobu, has just said and I quote him, “Dagbon owes Nana Akufo-Addo Addo a depth of gratitude.”

“He appreciates what Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has done and Nana Akufo-Addo is not a Dagomba man.”

“He is an Akyem man, and an Akan, who has brought peace to Dagomba land through his effort, along with others to bring peace to Dagbon so we are grateful to him.”

Dr. Bawumia further wondered why former President Mahama disparaged Akyems, who are proud Ghanaians, just as any other tribe.

“Nana Akuffo-Addo, yes he is an Akyem man but he is a Ghanaian, and the Akyem people are proud Ghanaians as other tribes.”

“If you look at our big six, three of them are from Akyem. These are not the kind of people you can blatantly call sakawa boys so we will continue to call on John Mahama to apologise unreservedly for what he has endorsed.”

MESSAGE TO MAHAMA
Dr. Bawumia sent a clear message to former President Mahama that the December elections will be fought on competence and records not on tribal line.

“This election is going to be fought on our records not on tribalism.”

“And my message to John Mahama is that you cannot win the Presidency with tribalism. Ghana has gone beyond tribalism.”

“Come and show your competence in the delivery to the people of Ghana. Because you don’t have competence, you are resorting to tribalism.”

Vice President Bawumia stressed that President Akuffo-Addo, by his deeds, has proved to be a unifier.

“We want unity and we want a President who will unite us. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has demonstrated that he is that President by what he has done not in Dagbon but other places.

Thank you for 'One Village One Dam' policy – Chereponi Chief

0

The Paramount Chief of Chereponi Traditional Area, Nanyame Kofi Malba VIII, has lauded Government for its targeted, pro-poor policies which are transforming the lives of many, especially rural dwellers.

Welcoming Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who is on a working visit to all five northern regions, to his palace on Saturday, 5th September 2020, Nanyame Malba expressed deep appreciation for these initiatives, which continue to touch lives every day.

“Your Excellency, we wish to thank you and your government for all the good works you are doing to transform Ghana.

“The several pro-poor policies and programmes by your government like the One Village One Dam, One District One Factory, Free SHS, Planting for Food and Jobs, expansion of the LEAP programme, NABCO, the expansion of electricity to many rural communities amongst others are highly laudable.”

The Chereponi chief was particularly happy with the One Village One Dam policy, which had extended the farming season and provided essential water for livestock, thus eliminating the yearly ritual of near starvation and famine.

The Chereponi Chief continued:

“I also commend your government for the intervention in providing Chereponi with a town water system. Indeed, we all acknowledge the significance of providing just a dug out as source of water for humanity, how much more providing the entirety of this town with potable drinking water.”

The Overlord of Chereponi also expressed deep appreciation to government for the peace Chereponi now enjoys, as well as the successful effort to create the North East Region, which has led to massive improvements in infrastructure.

“More dear to the heart and wellbeing of the people of Chereponi is the peace and harmony we enjoy now. The Chiefs and people of Chereponi are grateful to your government for the interventions made to restore the peace in Chereponi for development,” Nanyame Malba VIII stated.

Vice President Bawumia assured the chiefs and people of even more initiatives to accelerate the development of the north especially and the country as a whole, and urged the voters to give President Nana Akufo-Addo another four years to do more for the people of Ghana.

Free SHS has indeed saved parents – Paramount Chief of Tatale confesses

The Paramount Chief of the Tatale Traditional Area, Obore Gariba Yonkosor II, has hailed government’s flagship programme, Free Senior High School (SHS).

According to him, the programme has offered a number of young people of school going age the opportunity which hitherto wasn’t there as well as easing the financial burden on parents and guardians.

“I wish to thank you for your laudable flagship policies and programmes your government has initiated since taking over power for which the district has received its fair share. Some of which include Free SHS which has relieved parents of burden of school fees.” He disclosed

He made this known when the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumua visited his palace today as part of his working visit to the Northern region.

Speaking about his traditional area at a durbar, the Chief acknowledged that although the government has done more, there is the need for more to be done in order to develop the area.

Obore Gariba Yonkosor II, pleaded for work to expedited on the deplorable nature of the road which has graduated manholes and human holes and poses serious risks on the life of the people in the area citing the deplorable state of the Yendi-Tatale road that links Ghana to Togo.

He said apart from loss of life government needs to prioritize the road to alleviate the suffering of the people and also open other opportunities for the area.

“Our major issue here as a district is bad road network across the length and breadth of the district and the deplorable nature of the Yendi to Tatale highway. About 90% of our people engage in farming and it is sad to note that during rainy season most of the roads linking the communities are cut off making it difficult for farmers to transport their farm produce to market centres for sale.”

“The Yendi to Tatale highway which is an international road linking Ghana and Togo is also in such a bad state especially during the rainy season to the extent that travelers who hitherto used this route divert to alternative route to the Republic of Togo.

This has negatively impacted on economic development of the area. We wish to appeal to your Excellency to prioritize the road and construct it to alleviate the suffering our people go through by travelling by road.”

Obore Gariba Yonkosor II noted that the Akufo-Addo led administration has done more and therefore needed to be given four more years to do more for the people of Ghana.

Four die in North East Region after Burkina Faso’s Bagre dam spillage

0

Four persons have been confirmed dead in parts of the North East Region following the spillage of the Bagre dam by authorities in Burkina Faso.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) confirmed this to Citi News.

Swathes of farmland have also been submerged as a result of the dam spillage.

Citi New’s reporter who visited the Janga community where one of the deaths occurred, reported that more water is flooding the banks of the Volta River which passes through several communities in the North East Region.

“The water flooded swathes of land that many farmers have been using to cultivate their early crops yearly. Two died in the Bunkpurugu District, one at Janga in the West Mamprusi Municipality whilst the fourth person died at Langbinsi in the East Mamprusi Municipality.

Three others died allegedly due to the rains.

Uncle of one of the deceased, Mohammed Ibrahim, said the family is yet to come to terms with the death of their son.

“He went to the farm and was returning and that happened. We searched for him for three days. That happened because of the heavy rains. He is a responsible man with a wife and kids. Although we were aware that the river will get flooded, it is surprising that he could drown in it.”

The North East Regional NADMO Director, John Kweku Alhassan appealed to philanthropists to support victims with relief items as his outfit is unable to assist all affected persons.

Others blamed the issue on the spillage of the Bagre dam in Burkinabe Faso which often wreaks havoc on the lives of people and their farms annually.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang demands suspension and total revocation of Public University Bill

0

Prof Opoku-Agyemang has renewed calls demanding the suspension and total revocation of the Public University Bill (PUB).

The Bill has been drafted by the Akuffo Addo led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government with an intent to pass it into law before the December 7th 2020 elections.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang who is the Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress, (NDC), and the country’s first female Vice Chancellor of a University, following her official review of the Bill, has found that it has no clear rationale.

Her professional assessment is that, in its present form, it will erode progress made over the decades by universities in Ghana and open the doors to needless political interference in the advancement of knowledge.

In effect, there is no justification for modifying the bill and as such it should be totally revoked.

“A bill that will give the President the power to appoint and fire a vice chancellor; or allow the sector minister to give policy direction to universities which will have to be complied with; has no business being considered for passage into law,” said Prof. Opoku-Agyemang.

The NDC as a Party has already expressed very strong reservations about the PUB.

The Party has stated that should the NPP pass it into law, it will revoke it when it assumes the governance of the country, when given the mandate by Ghanaians to return to office come January 2021.

MTN Ghana goes to the Supreme Court for review

MTN Ghana has applied to the Supreme Court to seek a review of an Accra High Court’s recent decision to dismiss its challenge against the National Communications Authority over a Significant Market Power (SMP)declaration.

In a statement signed by Mr Samuel Koranteng, Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Saturday, MTN said the steps to the Apex Court of the land was taken after a careful review of the High Court’s judgment.

The statement said: “On September 1, 2020, the High Court of Justice (Commercial Division) dismissed the company’s application for a judicial review of the classification of MTN Ghana as an SMP by the National Communications Authority (NCA).

“MTN Ghana respects the decision of the Court, however in our opinion, the judgement did not address our concerns that the NCA’s decision did not meet the requirements of procedural fairness.”

MTN Ghana acknowledges the duties and powers of the NCA to promote fair competition among licensed operators, the company said.

The statement said MTN Ghana supports the legitimate exercise of the NCA’s regulatory powers but, “MTN Ghana believes that a decision by the highest court of the land would provide certainty and veritable precedence on the procedural fairness in this, and future regulatory decisions of the Authority.

“This will no doubt safeguard the interest of customers, shareholders, investors and the wider industry”.

The statement noted that there was still an opportunity for further engagements with the regulatory authorities, saying, MTN Ghana would continue to reach out to the regulator and key stakeholders to have the concerns of both sides addressed collaboratively and amicably.

The statement assured customers, shareholders and other stakeholders of MTN’s unflinching commitment to its regulatory obligations and support for the Ghanaian government’s efforts to enhance growth and competition in all segments of the telecommunications market.

“The company will continue to invest and innovate to realize its belief that every Ghanaian deserves the benefits of modern connected life.

“MTN Ghana will refrain from further statements or comments on this matter until it becomes necessary to update all stakeholders of future material developments,” it said.

Mahama's SADA for northern development was a monumental waste of tax payers money" – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has challenged former President Mahama to name just one legacy which his purported programme for the development of the northern part of Ghana, the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA).

Addressing a durbar in his honour by the chiefs and people of Tatale Traditional area on Friday September 4, Bawumia described SADA as “a monumental and inexplicable waste of tax payer resources”, and expressed disgust at the insensitive manner in which Mahama’s administration exploited the poor people of the north and wasted millions of dollars under the guise of developing the north through SADA.

“Where is the legacy of SADA?” Dr. Bawumia asked.

“They said they have invested in tree planting. We say where are the trees? They say they have all been burnt by fire.”

“The SADA program under John Dramani Mahama wss a monumental and inexplicable waste of tax payer resources. A monumental and inexplicable waste and you are dealing with our people; the poor people of the north. And you take money meant for their development into guinea fowls flying schemes.”

Dr. Bawumia said unlike former President Mahama, President Akufo-Addo has proven to be a leader who truly cares about development for all.

“Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is a different type of leader. He is a leader who talks development and does development,” Dr. Bawumia noted.

“This is why you’re seeing all these projects across Tatale Sanguli and other parts of the north. President Akuffo-Addo is a leader who believes in inclusive development, and the true development of the northern part of the country.”

Narrowing the government’s develolment agenda to Tatale Sanguli constituency, Dr. Bawumia said the government of President Akuffo-Addo has done more in three and half years for the area than the former President Mahama and the NDC did in eight years.

“What we have done in the past three and half years in Sanguli is more than what the NDC did in eight years and they should come and challenge and show us what they did.”

He urged the Chiefs and people of the area, to continue to support President Akufo-Addo, who has kept faith with them, and not someone who failed the north.

“Former President Mahama failed you and he now says you should give him another chance so that he will come and do the job that someone is already doing.”

“Nana Akufo-Addo is already doing the job and he is someone you can trust so why change someone you can trust for the person who failed you?”
