Commissioning of Asomdwee Park: NDC justifies boycott

The Deputy Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Godwin Ako Gun has explained why the NDC has decided to boycott an invitation by the Atta Mills Institute to the inauguration of the renovated Asomdwe Park.

The Former President, Mr John Evans Atta Mills who died on July 24, 2012 was buried at the ‘Asomdwe Park’.

Prior to Sunday, July 24, 2022, which marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Atta Mills, the NDC although had outlined a programme to commemorate the day, was given an invitation to witness a memorial thanksgiving service and the inauguration of a renovated Asomdwee Park. But they made it clear that they were not interested.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Abena Dufie Asare Agyepong, Mr Godwin Ako Gun explained that the NDC in collaboration with Atta Mills’ family had planned to visit the grave of Atta Mills at exactly 12.30 p.m. and do a memorial service for him.

He said they planned that at exactly 1.40 p.m., they would observe a minute silence for Atta Mills since it was the exact time he died in 2012.

Unfortunately, Mr Godwin Ako Gun said they had an invitation from the Atta Mills Institute that it had refurbished the Asomdwee Park so they were inviting them to witness its commissioning which will be done by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.

According to him, 20 cards were delivered to the party, with no specifications of the bearers of the card, indicating that they were not really needed at the event.

He was of the belief that the invitation would have been more credible if names of those they were expecting were written on the cards.

Mr Godwin Ako Gun stated that for a fact that a private company invited them does not make the NDC want to attend the programme.

“Ideally, we know that the place is a National Security Area, and so if someone will invite us, it should be the Coastal Development Authority (CODA) or National Security but this time around, an organisation is inviting us. For the letter, they arranged about 20 cards and brought it, not even with a courtesy which states that this card is going to Johnson Asiedu Nketia or Ofosu Ampofo and so if you want to attend, you pick one and then you go. Meanwhile, when it comes to protocol, the government has a protocol department that oversees all government programmes so it means we are not even needed there in the first place. And for the fact that an institute or a private person is inviting us, it is not something that as a national event, we would want to be part of it,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said the President was being divisive by using Mr Koku Anyidoho, who is the Founder of Atta Mills Institute, against them, knowing very well that Mr Koku Anyidoho has been sacked from the NDC.

Blame MCE for attack on miners on AngloGold concession – Expert

A Mining Expert, Eng. Dr Koku Amoako, has stated that the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, Mr Elijah Adansi-Bonah should be blamed for the atatck on miners who were mining on a concession belonging to AngloGold Ashanti.

It was reported recently that some indigenous miners were brutalised and arrested for allegedly mining on a concession belonging to AngloGold Ashanti.

According to reports, the victims were allegedly beaten by soldiers and made to lie in the mud without being taken through the due legal process.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Abena Dufie Asare Agyepong, Eng. Dr Koku Amoako said the MCE should have engaged the Minister to speak with the authorities of AngloGold Ashanti and plead with them to release a portion of their concession to the local miners so that they can also work to feed themselves.

According to him, the MCE knew the woes of his people and so if he failed to help them secure a place for mining, then he cannot escape blame.

“What happened was not good but we have to blame the MCE. The MCE knew the concerns of the people, this government has introduced community mining and every MCE who knows the worries of miners, you can talk with the Minister to get a place.
Even if the concession belongs to someone and he has finished mining, you can engage the stakeholders and beg them to give a small portion to the people in the community, legalise it and do community mining in order to protect the residents,” he said.

He explained that a concession can belong to a company for about ten or 15 years, insisting that the MCE could have discussed with the company to give the people a small portion.

Meanwhile, he said AngloGold Ashanti cannot be blamed for what happened because they obtained their concession legally and they were paying tax, adding that it is not proper for someone to go on their concession to steal, saying it will scare away investors away.

Way Forward
He called on the MCE to engage the company to release a portion of their concession to the miners in order to prevent them from going to mine at unauthorised places.

“It is not proper to allow the NGO to make changes to the grave without recourse to the family.”

“Apparently a group calling itself Atta Mills Institute that the family does not recognize and Coastal Development Authority have gone to break this grave of President Evans Atta Mills…why would you go and touch somebody’s grave without informing the family?… Who has the body now? That is the question I want to ask Ghanaians,” Samuel Atta Mills said at a press conference.

Mills’ heritage: Who owns the rights?

0

.  By Maxwell Okamafo Addo.

Two Certificates: Who owns the Right? JEA Mills Memorial Heritage or John Evans Atta  Mills Memorial Heritage

WHAT’S IN A NAME?
On the face of it, the phrase “what’s in a name?” may sound rhetorical, but when the name assumes the status of a legal debate, then it is no longer a matter of rhetorical expression.

Two factions in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) – The John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage  faction and the Alex Segbefia-led faction respectively – are haggling over who has the legal right to use the name Mills Heritage.

While the Segbefia faction registered the name J. E. A. MILLS HERITAGE LGB under the Companies Act 2019 (Act 991) on 14th October 2021, the other faction officially registered the full name JOHN EVANS ATTA MILLS MEMORIAL HERITAGE LBG under the same Companies Act on 31st January 2022.
Ordinarily, this may look like mere semantics, but when the question of who is best suited to protect and project, the late president’s legacy.

The “battle” over the use of the name has been raging the whole of the year, but it reached a crescendo when the Segbefia faction officially launched its foundation in early February 2022.

Now the other faction is raising the question of why the name was registered with just the initials for the late president because the initials J.E.A. could mean anything from Joseph (for the J), through Emmanuel (for the E), to Ato (for the A) in the name registered by the Segbefia faction.

As indicated above, this may sound just semantics but it has gone beyond that, and the legal dimension is now taking to the front burner, especially with the 10th-anniversary commemoration of the death of John Evans Atta Mills on the minds of Ghanaians.  The legitimacy of the two respective names is dominating the news agenda, For now, it’s only the Registrar General and Ghanaians who can Decide.

Razak Opoku punches Prof. Steve Hanke

0

Policy Analyst, Razak Kojo Poku, has taken on economist, Professor Steve Hanke, for consistently bashing President Akufo Addo over the current state of the economy.

Prof. Hanke, an Economist with the John Hopkins University in the United States, said the current economic crisis should be attributed to the bad leadership of President Akufo Addo.

However, in a statement, Razak Opoku debunked the allegation by the economic professor adding, “ It is very funny and interesting for Professor Steve H. Hanke to say that and in fact, the 79-year-old Professor Steve Hanke forgot that when you point the finger at someone there are three fingers pointing back at you”

Below is the full statement:

85% of Americans Say the Country is on the Wrong Track & 79% Say US Economy is Poor and Things Getting Worse under Joe Biden’s Leadership: Razak Kojo Opoku Writes to Professor Steve Hanke

According to Professor Steve Hanke, an Economist with Johns Hopkins University, “under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership things just keep getting worse. Sky high food & fuel costs have triggered violent protests”.

It is very funny and interesting for Professor Steve H. Hanke to say that and in fact, the 79-year-old Professor Steve Hanke forgot that when you point the finger at someone there are three fingers pointing back at you.

Yes, it is true that the economic situation in Ghana is not the best largely due to the external global economic difficulties affecting all Countries worldwide. Akufo-Addo’s government has admitted to the unfortunate economic crisis and steps have been taken just like any responsible Government to mitigate the impact of the Russia-Ukraine War and the adverse effects of global COVID-19.

However, I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to educate Professor Steve Hanke about the current economic crisis in his home country, the United States of America.

The VAST MAJORITY of Americans are UNHAPPY with the state of the US Economy.

According to AP-NORC Survey released in June 2022:

1. 85% of Americans say the Economy is getting WORSE and that things in country are heading in the WRONG DIRECTION.

2. 79% of Americans described the national economy of the United States of America as POOR and Things Keep Getting Worse under Joe Biden’s administration.

3. 92% of Republicans are DISSATISFIED with the direction of the Country.

4. 78% of Democrats are DISSATISFIED with the direction of the country, the highest number among Democrats since President Joe Biden took Office.

According to YouGovAmerica Poll released in June 2022:

1. Most Americans say the US Economy is getting worse. 58% of American Citizens described the economy as GETTING WORSE.

2. 78% of Republicans believe that the US Economy is WORSENING.

3. 66% of Independents (without any political affiliation/association) believe that the US Economy is WORSENING.

4. 37% of Democrats believe that US Economy is WORSENING.

A CNN Poll of Polls released June 2022 indicate that:

1. 57% of Americans DISAPPROVED the performance of Joe Biden, the USA President.

2. 8 in 10 of Democrats said the Country is going on the WRONG TRACK.

According to Reuters/Ipsos Poll released June 2022:

1. 38% of Democrats say that things in United States of America are on the WRONG TRACK.

2. 86% of Republicans say things in the United States of America are on the WRONG TRACK.

The CNN Poll of Polls, Quinnipiac University Poll, CBS News/YouGov Poll, NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll, AP-NORC Poll and Reuters/Ipsos Poll are all concluding that VAST MAJORITY of Americans think that things are getting worse and the economy of America under Joe Biden’s leadership is fast deteriorating heading towards Recession.

The American public views Joe Biden’s economy as in WORSE SHAPE since 2008 when the economy of USA was in a Deep Recession. Gallup’s Economic Confidence Index in 2008 revealed that 85% of Americans say the Economy was getting Worse.

According to Andrew Hodge, an Economist in the IMF’s Western Hemisphere Department published July 2022, “The IMF’s annual review of the US Economy focuses on the policies needed to return inflation to the Fed’s medium-term target. Most Workers’ Wages have FAILED to keep up with INFLATION, eroding the PURCHASING POWER of Households and causing SIGNIFICANT HARDSHIP”.

By estimate, the American Household is now spending more than an average of $500-600 or even more every month on goods and services as a result of a 40year high inflation of 9.1%.

The USA Annual Consumer Inflation climbed to 8.6% in May and rose to 9.1% in June 2022, the highest level in more than 40 years and thus affecting Americans spending in the areas of FOOD and FUEL forcing majority of Americans to make brutal decisions. Inflation has stopped Americans from buying Vehicles of all kinds. Gasoline is up 60% coupled with Groceries moving up to 12%.

The Federal Reserve (Central Bank of United States of America) has lowered the growth forecast of United States of America to 1.7% for this year 2022, down from its previous projection of 2.8% growth forecast that was made in March 2022.

According to a story published by CNN on July 17, 2022 (Copyright 2022 CNN Newsource):

1. Many Americans say their salaries are not keeping up with the rate of inflation.

2. Some are forgoing bills or medications and many others are turning to assistance Programs like Food Banks.

According to River City Food Bank Executive Director, Amanda McCarthy, “We have seen skyrocketing numbers of people needing food and unfortunately, we are not getting the same level of donations that we used to”.

Indeed the Russia-Ukraine War is largely affecting the demand and supply of food and fuel in the United States of America. This is 100% Fact.

3. According to Eric Johnson, “especially after COVID, nobody has money for anything and now everything goes up higher and higher”

4. According to Sacramento resident, Janet Nelson, “It is forcing families to make brutal decisions. It’s like what do you want? Eat or drive”.

5. Rent is seeing its highest monthly rise since 1986.

6. Consumer sentiment hit a record low of 42% as Americans are struggling to remain where they are financially and 85% of Americans think that the economy is GETTING WORSE.

7. According to Karen Martin, a 911 Operator near Tampa, Florida, “She is a single mom raising two sons while making less than $20 an hour. She said, I’m not making ends meet, I’m not making it, I’m spending my savings. It’s the first time in my life I’ve had to apply for FOOD STAMPS because I don’t know how we’re going to continue eating groceries”.

Honestly, I, Razak Kojo Opoku would like to humbly suggest to Professor Steve Hanke to Pay the necessary attention to FOOD and FUEL COSTS in his home Country, the United States of America, and stop the unnecessary attacks on the Government of Akufo-Addo.

All Countries including USA are suffering from Food and Fuel Costs largely due to the COVID-19 and Russia-Ukraine War.

According to www.bloomberg.com on 18/07/2022,  Flat & Point in Chicago priced its 2-pound loaves of bread at $10(equivalent to GHS 81.2) to offset higher organic ingredients. Also, the average cost of a loaf of bread is $2.5(equivalent to GHS 20.3) in the United States of America according to Study-in-US. Org.

Joe Biden’s administration has been faced with several Protests including the recent Abortion Laws.

Heatwave: Ferocious European heat heads north

Sweltering temperatures hit much of Western Europe on Tuesday as a ferocious heatwave headed north.

The UK hit its highest ever temperature of 40.2C, according to provisional Met Office figures, and forecasters warned temperatures were still climbing.

Extreme heat warnings were issued in France and record July temperatures were reported in the Netherlands.

Deadly wildfires in France, Portugal, Spain and Greece have forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes.

Two people were killed by forest fires in Spain’s north-western Zamora region and trains in the area were halted because of fire near the tracks. An elderly couple died while trying to escape fires in northern Portugal.

Heatwaves have become more frequent, more intense, and last longer because of human-induced climate change. German Environment Minister Steffi Lemke said the climate crisis meant the country had to rethink its preparations for very hot weather, drought and flooding.

Wildfires were still burning a day after several French cities including Nantes in the west saw their hottest-ever day.

More than 30,000 people have had to flee, with several camp sites destroyed and emergency shelters set up for evacuees.

Fire danger forecast map

Gironde, a popular tourist region in the south-west, has been hit particularly badly, with firefighters from across France battling to control two blazes that have destroyed 19,300 hectares (47,700 acres) of land in the past week. The city of Bordeaux was blanketed by smoke early on Tuesday as the wind changed direction.

“It’s a monster like an octopus, and it’s growing and growing and growing in the front, in the back, on both sides,” said Jean-Luc Gleyze, Gironde’s regional president.

The hottest temperatures have now moved to the north and east. Hundreds of people have had to leave their homes in the far north-west of Brittany, and fire has destroyed 1,400 hectares of vegetation.

A dozen animals at the zoo in La Teste-de-Buch died of stress and from the high temperatures, the government said. In a complex operation involving vets, zookeepers and others, 363 animals that could be moved were driven in convoys to Bordeaux-Pessac zoo 65km (40 miles) away.

Landiras smoke

The UK’s Met Office said 40.2C°C was provisionally recorded at Heathrow Airport west of London on Tuesday, and forecasters warned temperatures were still climbing in many places. Extreme heat warnings have been issued covering central, northern and south-east England.

Forecasters say the heatwave is heading north, with the mercury expected to hit 40C in the far south of Belgium as well as western and southwestern Germany. A fire broke out in dunes at the Belgian resort of De Haan, setting several vehicles alight.

Germany’s DWD weather service recorded a national record temperature of 41.2C in the city of Duisburg in July 2019 and spokesman Andreas Friedrich said similar highs were possible on Tuesday in similar areas along the River Rhine.

The Netherlands saw one of its hottest days on record on Tuesday with 38.9C in Maastricht, forecasters said, warning that temperatures were continuing to rise.

Firefighters work to extinguish a forest fire in Alvendre, near Guarda, Portugal, 18 July 2022
Image caption, Firefighters have been mobilised across Portugal

In Spain and Portugal, more than 1,000 deaths have been attributed to the heat in recent days. A forest fire in Losacio in the north-west left one firefighter dead on Sunday and the body of a 69-year-old shepherd was found on Monday.

Temperatures in Portugal hit 47C on Thursday – a record for July. Most of the country has been placed under high fire danger by the national meteorological office IPMA.

Several villages were evacuated as a fire spread in the Murça area of northern Portugal, and a man and a woman in their 70s died in their car while trying to flee the flames.

Firefighters were fighting the blaze on three fronts and a local mayor said more than 3,000 hectares had been burned. Authorities are anxious to avoid a repeat of 2017, when 66 people were killed in wildfires.

Watch: Train is surrounded by wildfires in Spain

In Spain, at least 20 fires are burning out of control. A passenger filmed the moment the train he was travelling on came to a temporary halt – as fires raged on both sides of the carriage near the northern border with Portugal.

Forecasters in Italy are warning of temperatures as high as 40 to 42C between Wednesday and Friday.

The effects of climate change in Europe were highlighted earlier this month when a melting glacier triggered an avalanche that killed 11 people. Now experts at Italy’s IlMeteo warn that new crevasses are opening up on Alpine peaks and that ice is melting even on Western Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc.

The world has already warmed by about 1.1C since the industrial era began and temperatures will keep rising unless governments around the world make steep cuts to emissions.
