Huge number of health workers go abroad

0

Zimbabwe has been hit by a huge exodus of health professionals amid the Covid-19 pandemic, with more than 2,200 leaving to take jobs in the US, UK, Australia and neighbouring states, according to the government’s Health Service Board.

This is more than double the number of doctors, nurses and pharmacists who left last year, and three times the number that left in 2019.

Despite repeated government promises to improve wages they remain low. An average worker in the public sector takes homes less than $200 a month, while in the UK – which relaxed visa restrictions for health workers in 2020 – they can earn 10 times as much.

Officials say the exodus has affected an already fragile health system, which suffers from a lack of medical equipment and medicines.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a minimum of 23 doctors per 10,000 people, which Zimbabwe is far from meeting. When the last survey was done in 2015, there was an average of just 1.6 doctors per 10,000 people.

Yair Lapid said the AstraZeneca doses would be distributed in the coming weeks under the international Covax scheme, designed to boost vaccine supplies to poorer nations around the world.

“I’m happy that Israel can contribute and be a partner in eradicating this pandemic from the world,” Lapid tweeted

.

The foreign ministry said the vaccines would go to nearly a quarter of African countries, though it did not specify which.

Only about 7% of people in Africa have been vaccinated, the World Health Organization said last month – the lowest rate of any continent.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Bawa Braimah urged all to take their health seriously and do frequent check ups to avoid deaths caused by cardiac arrest and high Blood Pressure.

For those who are diagnosed with BP, he advised them to take their medicines frequently as prescribed by their doctors in order to live longer.

“These sudden deaths remind us to check our health very well since some of us may be suffering from cardiac arrest or heart failure. So, I will urge all of us to take our health seriously. If you often check and they put you on medication, do well to take your medicine everyday,” he advised.

“There is no politician in Ghana who does not have BP due to the nature of our politics as well as the negativity associated with our communication. Sometimes you hear things from people you least expect and you will be surprised. I think there is no politician in this country or the whole world who does not have BP so let us take good care of ourselves.”

Touching on covid-19, Mr Bawa Braimah said most politicians including the president cannot escape blame.

“The President is the number one culprit because there were many events he graced where covid-19 protocols were broken,” he said.

He said he was not sure the covid-19 protocols will be observed at the upcoming NPP National Delegates Conference, saying the leaders flout the protocols themselves after preaching it.

Meanwhile, he urged the leaders to practice what they preach by observing the protocols so that others can follow suit.

Zoomlion donates to Ekumfi TI Ahmadiyyah, Edinaman SHS

0

Waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, has reached out with its senior high and technical schools sanitation awareness programme to further intensify and inculcate in students the habit and hobby of environmental cleanliness and personal hygiene among other things.

A Senior Communications Specialist of the company, Adams, Mohammed Mahama, who is an alumni of the school in a presentation, entreated the young men and women to be responsible and play the role of sanitation ambassadors in their school and communities while on holidays.

He stressed that Zoomlion and government were collaborating to transform the waste management industry, and thus urged the students to contribute their quota by changing from the unpatriotic attitude of the Ghanaian against waste management to a more responsible and acceptable sanitation focused attitudes going forward.

“Zoomlion has established ultra-modern integrated recycling and composting plants (IRECoPs) in Accra, Kumasi and was also in the process of constructing similar projects in the remaining (14) fourteen regions to ensure that we create value out of the waste we generate by recycling them to help keep Ghana clean,” Mr Adams said.

In this regard, he said Zoomlion has partnered the Ghana Education Service (GES) to intensify a sanitation awareness and improvement programme to ensure the total wellbeing of students in some selected senior high and technical schools across the country.

He appealed to the students to have it at the back of their minds that being obedient in school and at home will lead them to become responsible adults.

“Also you should study your books and pass your exams very well to be able to further your education while making good environmental sanitation practice a priority.

The Ekumfi District SHEP Coordinator, Mr Richard Boatey, while addressing the students appealed to them to consider personal hygiene as the starting point to being environmental sanitation ambassadors.

He said as Ghana has chalked a remarkable success in the supply of good and potable water of over 73 per cent, it has done terribly at only 13 per cent at the sanitation level in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in the WASH sector.

Another Communications expert at Zoomlion, Mr. Francis Atayure Abirigo, on behalf of his company donated some waste bins to the school.

He urged the school’s staff members and students to inculcate the habit of dropping solid waste into the waste bins.

Mr Abirigo assured the school that Zoomlion will continue to support their sanitation needs to train more responsible adults like Mr Adams Mohammed Mahama.

Earlier the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem (KEEA) Municipal SHEP Coordinator of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Madam Amuesiwah Daniels, during a presentation to students of Edinaman Senior High School complained about how Ghana was seriously lagging behind as total access to sanitation was at only 13%.

She stated that “Children lose 272 million school days each year due to diarrhoea globally and an estimated one in three school-aged children in the developing world are infested with intestinal worms”.

Madam Daniels retorted that these illness promote low school attendance and stunting growth as a result of malnutrition and poor academic performance which was a worry to the GES.

She said “Effective behaviour change programmes such as Zoomlion’s was critical to the success and sustainability of all water, sanitation and hygiene interventions.

She urged schools to practise handwashing with soap, safe handling of drinking water, safe excreta disposal, environmental sanitation and personal hygiene including menstrual hygiene,” among the female students.

A set of waste bins were also donated to the Edinaman Senior High School for the use of staff and students by Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

Covid-19: Health Director wants education on vaccine enhanced after low turnout in V/R

0

A Deputy Health Director in the Volta Region, Dr Kwesi Dzokoto, has called for an enhanced education on the vaccine after large quantities of the vaccine expired following low turnout.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) revealed that large quantities of vaccines dispatched to the Volta region expired due to vaccine hesitancy among the people.

Government introduced new measures, including a mandatory vaccination drive at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), as part of efforts to get more Ghanaians to vaccinate against COVID-19.

Ghana’s vaccination drive had earlier experienced a few setbacks due to shortage of vaccines.

Manager of the Expanded Programme of Immunisation at the GHS, Dr. Kwame Amponsah Achiano, says the refusal of the people in the Volta region to get vaccinated is thwarting the country’s effort to limit the spread of the pandemic.

Speaking to the issue on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, Dr Kwesi Dzokoto noted that although the Volta Region had a lot of vaccines in the region, the vaccines are expiring due to hesitancy by residents.

According to Dr Kwesi Dzokoto, the Volta Region has vaccinated only 15% out of the 1million target set by the Ghana Health Service.

Asked about the cause of the hesitancy, Dr Kwesi Dzokoto said the people have been brainwashed by anti-vaccine campaigners on social media.

“The low turnout can be attributed to the fact that the youth say they do not believe the covid-19 virus exist since they do not have friends or family who have contracted the virus. They also believe the virus is not even in the Volta Region. Another big issue is that a local musician has composed a song against the vaccine and it’s a facto. It’s a multifaceted issue and it is disheartening. We will call on all relevant stakeholders to enhance the education on the vaccine,” Dr Kwesi Dzokoto told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.

Four children die in bouncy castle fall

0

Four children have died and five others are injured after falling from a bouncy castle that was blown into the air in Australia, police say.

The accident – caused by a wind gust – happened on Thursday at a primary school fun day in Devonport, Tasmania.

Police said the children had fallen from a height of about 10m (32ft). Two boys and two girls died.

Authorities did not give their ages but said all were in grades five or six – typically for children aged 10-12.

“A wind gust had reportedly caused the jumping castle and inflatable balls to lift into the air,” Tasmanian Police Commissioner Darren Hine said.

“Our hearts are breaking for the families and the loved ones, schoolmates, teachers of these young people who were taken too soon.”

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison described the accident as “unthinkably heartbreaking”.

“Young children on a fun day out… and it turns to such horrific tragedy. At this time of the year, it just breaks your heart,” he said.

Paramedics arrived quickly at Hillcrest Primary School after the accident at about 10.00 local time (23:00 Wednesday GMT).

The children were given first aid before being flown in helicopters to hospital.

Parents were alerted immediately following the incident, which happened on the last day of the school year.

ABC reporter Monte Bovill tweeted that locals “have been running to the school to collect their children”.

One parent, speaking to a local newspaper, said the school had previously installed such floats on similar occasions with no problems.

“You wouldn’t dream a fun activity day would end like this,” the woman told the Hobart Mercury.

“We all feel so heartbroken for the parents involved. And feel guilty that we are also relieved our children were not injured.”

A coroner’s investigation was under way, police said.

Devonport, on Tasmania’s northern coast, is a small port city with just under 30,000 residents.

There have been other fatal bouncy castle incidents. In 2019, two children were killed and 20 others injured in a similar accident in China.

A year earlier, a girl died in the UK after being thrown from a bouncy castle that eyewitnesses say exploded on a Norfolk beach.

And two fairground workers were jailed for manslaughter by gross negligence after a bouncy castle blew away with seven-year-old Summer Grant inside, in Essex, in March 2016.
