Fuel Price: Goil was making “huge” profits- GPRTU Sec

0

The General Secretary of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr Godfred Abulbire says Goil was making unnecessary profits by raising the fuel price to about GHC6.85 per litre.

According to him, the reduction of fuel from GHC6.85 to GHC6.70 per litre will not affect Goil in anyway, saying the cut will only affect their huge profit margins.

The Coalition of Commercial Transport Operators in Ghana including the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) embarked on a sit down Strike on Monday, December 6, 2021.

This was to get the government scrap all the taxes on the pump price of petroleum products to ease the burden on Ghanaians.

It was observed that while many drivers parked their vehicles, few ones did not adhere to the instruction of the striking unions, and were seen picking passengers to and fro.

This got some of the drivers who went on strike to confront those who did otherwise.

While embarking on the strike, the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare appealed to drivers to suspend their strike.

After the Chief of Staff spoke to Goil, it reduced the fuel price from GHC6.85 to GHC 6.70 per a litre.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Godfred Abulbire said Goil will still make profits even after reducing the fuel price.

He said even before the reduction, Goil was charging much more than all the other fuel stations, despite getting the fuel from the same source.

He was hopeful that the fuel price can still be reduced even after the 15 pesewas reduction moving forward.

“They will not lose anything; they were just making unnecessary profits. What they are selling is now the realistic figure,” he said.

Leaked audio: GPRTU Sec. defends Deputy Transport Minister over LGBTQI

0

Deputy Minister of Transport, Frederick Obeng Adom, has been exonerated over reports that he kicked against the reduction in fuel prices due to the alleged withdrawal of support to Ghana by International Donors over the raging LBGQI+ debate.

Due to their demands, the driver unions had to meet the Ministry of Transport to deliberate on the best way to solve their issues.

An audio which was leaked few days ago suggested that during the back and forth with the Ministry, the Deputy Minister of Transport said government could not reduce fuel price as the drivers demanded because international sponsors had withdrawn their support to Ghana for not accepting the legalisation of LGBTQI.

But speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Godfred Abulbire said the one who made the allegations was called and he admitted the claims were false.

According to him, as a leader, he asked the person in question, who is also part of the Leadership of the Coalition of Concerned Drivers to retract his statement and apologise to the Minister and all parties who had been offended with regards to the audio.

Failure to do that, he said the Leadership of the GPRTU will deal with the man in question.

He said the Minister rather said that government could not raise enough money to construct roads or do other developmental projects if it scraps all the taxes

“I listened to that audio and my name was even mentioned but it was an unfortunate statement made by David Agboado. They explained to us how difficult it was to reduce the tax and we accepted. The Deputy Minister for Transport and the Minister for Energy came, and the man never said anything close to what David said. He never said anything about LGBTQI,” he said.

Residents in Lower Manya Krobo and Yilo Krobo communities experienced a total blackout in the communities.

This comes days after the ECG shut down its office in the Somanya citing safety as part of the reasons for the move.

The District office has been relocated to Juapong in the Volta Region and will serve seven districts including Lower Manya Krobo, Asuogyaman, Ho West, North Tongu, Shai Osudoku, Okere and Yilo Krobo.

Addressing the total power outage in an interview with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, the Public relations officer fo the Tema Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) , Sekyiwaa Mensah, said the power outage was not from ECG.

She added that ECG has shut down the feeders at the Bulk Supply Point (BSP) directly feeding the communities in order to protect” its network, lives and properties of innocent customers and the general public within the Lower Manya Krobo and Yilo Krobo communities.

Part of E-Levy would be used to support farmers- Agric Minister

The Minister of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has called on farmers and Ghanaians as a whole to embrace the government’s proposed E-Levy transaction which was announced in the 2022 budget statement by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, last month.

According to Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the Akufo-Addo administration was working assiduously to raise money enough to support farmers in the country, hence the introduction of the E-Levy.

However, he pointed out that the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC’s) entrenched position on the matter was very worrying.

Dr Afriyie Akoto made the assertion when he visited one of the government’s built warehouses at Gambaga in the North East Region on his first day visit to the region as part of his 13-day tour of the northern sector.

The warehouse contained thousands of tons of harvested rice for safe keeping.

Prior to the visit to the warehouse, Dr Afriyie Akoto held a durbar with stakeholders and farmers in the agriculture industry in the region where he encouraged them to support the government’s policies in the sector.

These, he said, included Fertiliser Subsidy, Planting For Food and Jobs ((PFJ) among others aimed at improving farming activities in the region.

On shortage of fertilisers, he indicated that the government was seriously working to address it.

“We are making arrangements to ensure that farmers in the country have fertilisers to apply to their crops,” he assured.
He explained that the problem has come about because of the global shortage of fertiliser, adding that this has caused increases in the price of fertlisers.

He said, regrettably Ghana does not produce fertilisers, however, added that the government has subsidised fertilisers’ for farmers by 50%. This facility, he said, started when the government begun its PFJ programme.

While admitting that there were demands for warehouses, he averred that the uncompleted ones will be worked on as quickly as possible.

The minister also paid a courtesy call on the Overlord of Mamprugu Kingdom, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sherigu, at his Nayiri Palace.

Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sherigu thanked the minister and his directors for making time to visit his community.

He recounted how his senior brother who was an agriculture extension officer helped him in his farming activities.

He therefore, challenged the agriculture minister to ensure that extension officers carry out the needed knowledge to the farmers to improve their yields, adding that the region was one of the leading food baskets in the country.

Speaking to journalists, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Mamprusi West, Aremeyaw Somo Lucky Basiutaly, who spoke on behalf of the farmers, mainly rice farmers, mentioned some challenges bedeviling the farmers.

These, he mentioned, included no power at the processing centre and a lack of warehouse in the district for rice farmers.

He, therefore, appealed to the minister to help resolve these challenges.

From the palace of the Overlord of Mamprusi, the minister’s team visited the Presbyterian Agriculture Services at Lanbinsi Tenguri where he interacted with the women farmers and promised to support their activities.

He then took his visit to Tamanaa Rice Factory located along the Tamale Highway where rice in its raw state were processed, packaged and sold to the final consumer or exported.

Somanya: “Will you be happy working under threats?” – ECG defends office shut down

0

The Public Relations officer for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in Tema, Sekyiwaa Mensah, has defended the shut down of the ECG office in Somanya in the Yilo Krobo District of the Eastern Region.

ECG recently shut down its office in Somanya in the Yilo Krobo District of the Eastern Region due to safety concerns.

The Managing Director of ECG, Mr Kwame Agyemang, on Monday, 6 December 2021, at a press conference said the district office was shut down to protect the lives of the workers of the state power distributor.

He said the office, which was shut down on Wednesday, 1 December 2021, has been relocated to Juapong in the Volta Region.

He noted that although the office had been relocated, it will operate on any faults reported in Lower Manya and Yilo Krobo with police protection.

“To protect the lives of our staff, which we dare not compromise on, we, henceforth, will operate the district from Juapong office; and going forward, any faults intervention, or any call to correct any anomaly in the system within the Yilo Krobo and Lower Manya Krobo communities will be dependent on the availability of police escort,” Mr Kwame Agyemang told press men.

Commenting on the issue on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, The Public Relations officer for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in Tema, Sekyiwaa Mensah, said the shutdown of the ECG office in Tema was necessary as the lives of the staff were in danger.

According to her, no employee will agree to work in an environment where their lives are in danger.

“ There is an issue and we are trying to address it. Why do you threaten and decide to vandalize?,” she quizzed.
