Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Mussa Dankwah, says Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson is currently better placed than National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia in the race to become the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for the 2028 elections.
According to Mr Dankwah, recent polling data shows that Mr Asiedu Nketia’s chances among the youth and the elite have declined, while Dr Ato Forson has moved ahead of the other potential contenders.
He attributed Dr Forson’s position partly to the current economic performance of the government, saying 56 per cent of NDC delegates believe the Finance Minister is better positioned economically to face the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2028 elections.
Mr Dankwah also disclosed that support for retaining Mr Asiedu Nketia as NDC National Chairman had declined from 61 per cent in July to 58 per cent in September.
He said the latest figures indicated that 58 per cent of NDC supporters wanted Mr Asiedu Nketia to remain chairman.
However, Mr Dankwah cautioned that support for Mr Asiedu Nketia as chairman should not necessarily be interpreted as support for him to lead the party into the 2028 presidential election.
“Those asking Asiedu Nketia to remain chairman will not vote for him if he contests for flagbearer,” he said.
He added that Mr Asiedu Nketia was “facing the realities of today’s politics” and noted that no Ghanaian had so far been elected president at an age above 75.
Mr Dankwah said he had shared the polling data with Mr Asiedu Nketia, whom he described as a friend, but acknowledged that the figures were not favourable to him in the flagbearer race.
He made the remarks on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie, hosted by Nana Yaw Fianko.
The NDC is expected to hold its presidential primary ahead of the 2028 general elections, with internal discussions and polling on potential contenders already generating interest within the party.
