Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has assured Ghanaians that no cedi will be borrowed to finance the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
In a social media post, the Finance Minister said government would ensure that the project is delivered without resorting to domestic borrowing.
He also disclosed that the Accra-Kumasi Expressway would be the first project to come under the scrutiny of the Value for Money Office, as part of measures to ensure that public funds allocated to the project are used efficiently.
“Not a cedi will be borrowed to construct the Accra-Kumasi Expressway,” Dr Ato Forson stated.
He added that the Value for Money Office would scrutinise the project to ensure that “every cedi delivers value.”
The comments come as government advances plans to develop the Accra-Kumasi corridor into an expressway, a major transport infrastructure project expected to improve connectivity between the country’s two major cities.
The project is also expected to strengthen the movement of people and goods while supporting economic activity along the corridor.
The Finance Minister’s assurance is aimed at addressing concerns over the financing of the project and ensuring greater accountability in the use of public resources.
By subjecting the project to value-for-money scrutiny, government is expected to assess whether expenditure delivers the intended benefits and represents good value for taxpayers.
