Destruction of water bodies worse under NPP gov’t – Ako Gunn

The Deputy National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, says the destruction of water bodies as a result of mining related activities has heightened under the Akufo-Addo led administration.
Ako Gunn, who asked the general public to tackle the issue holistically devoid of political affiliations, noted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has destroyed water bodies through the activities it swore to eliminate.
Godwin Ako Gunn made the statement in relation to a press conference held by the NDC at the banks of River Pra in the Central Region to express displeasure over  government’s failure to protect illegal mining from contaminating water bodies.
Speaking at the Press Conference on Sunday February 16th 2020, Communications Director for the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi called for the removal of President Akufo-Addo as co-Chair of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) advocates.
Goal 6 of the SDG advocates for universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030.
According to Sammy Gyamfi, contrary to the Goal 6 of the SDG’s, President Akufo-Addo has done little or nothing towards the fight against illegal mining, which is not in line with the goal 6 of the SDGs.
Speaking with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive with Host Ekourba Gyasi, Deputy National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn noted that from the little the party gathered in Central Region, residents in areas whose water bodies have been contaminated due to activities of illegal mining are very bitter and are disappointed in the NPP administration.
“Even journalists who were present at River Pra yesterday were shocked and surprised at the level of degradation and the level of destruction the activities of illegal mining have caused the water bodies in mining areas while the President sits unconcerned”, he said.
Asked if the seizure of the excavators did not minimize the level of damage being done to the water bodies, Godwin Ako Gunn noted that the  seized excavators were given to other persons to engage in the  same activities for which they were seized.
