Election 2020: EU report a reflection of the Ghanaian media – GJA

The President of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Dr. Affail Monney, says the European Union report (EU) on Ghana’s 2020 general election is a reflection of the Ghanaian media.

This statement by the GJA boss follows the EU report on the 2020 general elections which mentioned that the Ghanaian media was divided during election coverage with some being biased towards the ruling government, NPP, and the other group being biased towards the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to the report, the State-owned GTV favoured the NPP in its election-related coverage.

The report also added that Women were significantly underrepresented in political life in that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) fielded only 24 female candidates while the NDC ran with just 22 in 275 constituencies.

“Perceived traditional roles of women, and, often, a lack of financial resources, contribute to the problem. On a positive note, for the first time one of the two main parties’ presidential candidates (NDC) chose a woman as running mate,” the report said.

In an interview with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Ekourba Gyasi, The President of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Dr. Affail Monney noted that the Ghanaian media is pluralistic in nature and so the tendency for some media houses to be pro- NDC and others tpro NPP is very high.

Citing the United States, GJA president mentioned that some of the Media are Pro- Republican and others are pro -Democrat.

“ The EU Report is a reflection of the Ghanaian media. In every pluralistic media, some are pro -government and others and pro -opposition. That is the trend. Every story has two or more sides, that is why media houses give opportunities to both sides to ascertain the truth. The report isn’t surprising. The law states that the President should have access to the state owned media at all times, and so the state owned media only performed in favour of the law”, he added.
