Free SHS: Ghana is 61 years late -Prof Adei

Former Vice Chancellor of Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei, over the weekend said Ghana is 61 years late with the introduction of Free Senior High School policy nationwide.

He reiterated that Ghana has experimented with the free education policy for six decades in the north and the outcome is good.

The Former Vice Chancellor of GIMPA Professor Stephen Adei made the comments when he was delivering the 1st Convocation Lecture Series of Takoradi Technical University at the University Hall in Takoradi.

The lecture was on the theme: "Enhancing the Development of Ghana through Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET): The Role of Technical Universities."

Professor Stephen Adei stressed the outcome of the implementation of the Free education in the three northern regions has been good hence the need to make it a national policy.

The Free Senior High School policy and the Double Track SHS System since their introduction ,have sparked  heated debates with varied opinions.

The Free Senior High School policy was implemented to offer a platform to every Ghanaian child living in Ghana the opportunity to receive secondary education free whilst the double track SHS system is to create room for more students to be admitted, using the existing educational facilities available.

The double track SHS system is also expected to convert the Senior High School calendar into a semester system.

Professor Adei further indicated that all the arguments against the free SHS and the Double Track SHS System are without merit.

The Vice-Chancellor of Takoradi Technical University, Rev. Professor John Frank Eshun on his part, indicated that the quality of a country's education system is a reflection of its level of development.
