Gov’t urged to partner industry players to make TVET attractive

Technical Inspectorate Director of Schools at the National Vocational Training Institute, Engineer Ibrahim Abari, has said, the only way government can improve the quality of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and make it attractive to the youth is to collaborate with industry players in both the private and public sector.

That, he said can be achieved by offering industrial attachment opportunities to most NVTI graduates to have hands on experience which will prepare them for the job market.

He said though statistics have shown that there has been some improvement in the enrollment of students for vocational and technical programs, their availability and experience for the job market is a major problem.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony for some students of the Weekends Vocational Institute at  Afariwa in the Tema Region, the Technical Inspectorate Director of the National Vocational and Technical Training Institute NVTI said it is about time government entered  into agreements with industries who will offer industrial attachment opportunities for  students learning TIVET.

This, he said will go a long way to help them become professionals and also prepare them for the job market when they graduate from school. He said this will also make TVET attractive.

This year’s Weekend Vocational Institute Graduation Ceremony, which was under the theme: “Empowering the Youth Through Vocation Training”, saw graduates who had studied sugar crafts, decor, beads making, fashion and amongst others, display varieties of their projects to the admiration of the public.

CEO of the institute, Madam Angela Banson who spoke about the challenges of TVET, stressed on the need for government support to make Vocational and Technical Training attractive for the youths.

According to her, even though she teaches her students in the language they understand, the need to also finance brilliant but needy students comes to play. In view of this, she believes any form of financial assistant or grants for such students to access “in the learning of vocational and technical courses will go a long way to help address unemployment amongst the youth”

Some awards were also given to best deserving graduands with the overall best student taking home a mini modified baking oven.
