Incumbent General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP) Lawyer Justin Frimpong Kodua (JFK) has officially declared his intention to seek re-election as General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), unveiling what he describes as a comprehensive strategy to rebuild the party and position it for victory in the 2028 general elections.
As the party prepares for its internal elections, his campaign is expected to focus on institutional reforms, grassroots mobilisation and strengthening the party’s structures ahead of the 2028 polls.
In his declaration, Mr. Kodua argued that the NPP’s path back to government must be driven by strong organisational structures, accountability and unity, rather than political rhetoric.
He framed his campaign around four key pillars—Prepared, Well-Positioned, Focused and Rebuild—which he said would guide the party’s recovery following its defeat in the 2024 general election.
Reflecting on the party’s electoral loss, the General Secretary acknowledged serving in the role during one of the NPP’s most challenging periods but maintained that leadership should be assessed not only by election outcomes but also by the ability to preserve and strengthen institutions in difficult times.
“Every election defeat presents a defining choice: change course entirely or entrust recovery to leadership that understands both the causes of the setback and the work required to rebuild,” he stated.
Mr. Kodua highlighted several achievements during his tenure, including the successful organisation of what he described as one of the largest and most transparent internal elections in the party’s history, the implementation of constitutional reforms based on recommendations of the Oquaye Committee, the establishment of statutory and sector committees, expansion of the party’s digital membership registration system, and improvements in internal administrative coordination.
According to him, these reforms have laid a solid foundation for the NPP’s rebuilding process ahead of the next general election.
The General Secretary also pledged to prioritise free and fair internal primaries, complete a credible national digital membership database, and strengthen grassroots structures from polling stations to constituency and regional levels.
He stressed that effective political organisation at the grassroots remains critical to electoral success.
Mr. Kodua further emphasised accountability, stating that while he accepts responsibility for matters within the scope of his office, his record demonstrates that he delivered on his mandate during a period of significant challenges for the party.
He also identified unity and discipline as central to the NPP’s recovery strategy, arguing that internal cohesion would be essential if the party is to regain public confidence and return to government in 2028.
Rather than presenting his re-election bid as a personal ambition, Mr. Kodua described it as part of a broader effort to prepare the NPP for its next presidential campaign, insisting that organisational readiness today will determine electoral success tomorrow.
