The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured pharmaceutical manufacturers that the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is up to date with payments, saying the latest disbursement was made on June 30, 2026.
Speaking at the 2026 PMAG Day celebration in Accra, Hon. Akandoh said the regular payments have improved the cash flow of healthcare providers and strengthened their ability to pay pharmaceutical suppliers.
The event was held on the theme: “Advancing Ghana’s Pharmaceutical Sovereignty Through Innovation, Requisite Skills Mix and Quality Industrial Value Chain for Economic Transformation.”
The Minister, however, acknowledged concerns by pharmaceutical manufacturers that some healthcare providers delay payments to suppliers despite receiving funds from the NHIA.
He said the Ministry of Health is engaging stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the challenge.

Mr. Akandoh also disclosed that the government is reviewing its procurement system to reserve more medicine contracts for qualified local manufacturers. According to him, the move is aimed at expanding local production, attracting investment and strengthening Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry.
He stressed that only companies that meet regulatory standards, offer value for money and can supply medicines consistently will benefit from the policy.
The Minister said the government’s goal is to build a competitive pharmaceutical industry that can meet local demand and expand into international markets.
