The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested two young men after an intelligence-led operation by its Regional Special Operations Team, popularly known as the Red Maria Team, led to the seizure of 170 parcels of suspected Indian hemp.
Speaking to the media, the Deputy Regional Crime Officer, ASP Richard Ackumey, said the operation was conducted following credible intelligence indicating that some individuals were continuing to smuggle illicit drugs into the Northern Region.
According to him, the Red Maria Team acted swiftly on the intelligence, leading to the arrest of the two suspects. A search conducted during the operation uncovered 170 well-packaged parcels of suspected Indian hemp, believed to have been intended for distribution within the region.
ASP Ackumey said the successful operation reflects the Northern Regional Police Command’s continued commitment to combating illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse through sustained intelligence-led policing.
He commended traditional authorities, opinion leaders, the media, and members of the public for their ongoing support in the fight against drug-related crimes.
The Deputy Regional Crime Officer disclosed that several suspects arrested in previous anti-drug operations have already been convicted and imprisoned, while others granted bail are still standing trial.
He added that narcotics seized in earlier operations have been submitted to the forensic crime laboratory for scientific examination, with the results expected to support ongoing prosecutions.
ASP Ackumey assured residents that the Command would intensify its crackdown on drug traffickers and urged the public to continue providing credible information to help the police eliminate illicit drugs and related criminal activities from the region.
