Nigerians petition ECOWAS over alleged ‘closure of 400 shops' in Ghana

Scores of Nigerians hit the streets on Monday at Abuja to protest over alleged discriminatory trade practices being meted out to their fellow countrymen by Ghanaian authorities.

They alleged that the Ghanaian authorities have shut down 400 shops belonging to their  'brothers and sisters'.

The Nigerians later presented a petition to the ECOWAS  office in Abuja after embarking on the peaceful march.

The demonstrators wielded placards with some interesting inscriptions:  ‘Ghana wants AFCTA secretariat but clamps on African traders,’ ‘We need ECOWAS intervention’, ‘Ghana re-open Nigeria’s shops now’, ‘ECOWAS, the situation in Ghana is totally unacceptable’.

Ironically, their counterparts in Ghana represented by Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA)  recently prevailed upon the government' to do something about the dominance of Nigerian traders in Ghana'.

There have been recorded incidents of confrontations between traders of the two neighbours in some parts of the country.
