More than 23,000 people are estimated to be living with HIV in the Western Region, according to the Ghana AIDS Commission.
The Acting Technical Coordinator of the Commission in the region, Antonio Francis, disclosed this at a stakeholders’ engagement on the HIV situation in the region.
He said the 2025 HIV Estimates and Projections Report showed a slight reduction in new infections but warned that the number of new cases remained a concern.
Mr Francis expressed particular worry about HIV infections among young people aged between 15 and 24.
He called for targeted prevention programmes, especially for adolescents, young girls and young women, to help reduce new infections and support efforts to end AIDS by 2030.
Meanwhile, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis has recorded the highest number of people living with HIV among districts in the region, with 4,198 cases.
The Metropolitan Chief Executive, Lawyer Frederick Faidoo, attributed the high figure partly to the cosmopolitan nature of the metropolis, which attracts migrants from different parts of Ghana and beyond.
He said other districts, including Tarkwa Nsuaem, Prestea Huni Valley and Wassa Amenfi, also recorded significant numbers of people living with HIV.
The engagement brought together stakeholders to discuss ways of strengthening prevention and reducing new infections in the region.
