The Ghana Police Service has arrested Sibamay Zakaria, the man captured in a viral video assaulting a suspect while the suspect was in police custody.
The Police said Zakaria is currently in custody and is assisting with investigations. He is expected to be put before the court.
The incident follows the arrest of a suspected pastor over alleged offensive comments about Prophet Mohammed. A video circulating on social media showed the suspect being assaulted while in police custody.
The Police Professional Standards Bureau has also begun investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Bureau will determine how the assault occurred and whether any police officers or other persons played a role in the incident.
The Police said anyone found culpable will face the necessary disciplinary or legal processes.
The Service has condemned the assault and reminded the public that suspects in police custody must be treated according to the law, regardless of the allegations against them.
It also urged the public to allow the Police and the courts to handle criminal matters rather than taking the law into their own hands.
