“Skirt and blouse” parliament will put gov’t on its toes – Expert

Dr. Isaac Owusu Mensah, Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon, says the “skirt and blouse” vote pattern in the 2020 elections will put the next New Patriotic Party (NPP) on its toes.

A survey by the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana (UG) predicted a one touch victory for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the December 7, 2020 presidential election.

Out of the number, 52.5 percent said they will vote for Nana Akufo-Addo, while 40. 9 percent said they will vote for John Mahama.

“The respondents who said they were going to vote based on sound campaign message, their preferred choices were NPP’s Akufo-Addo 52.5 and followed by the NDC’s John Mahama 40.9. GUM’s Christian Kwabena Andrews got 1.3 but what is more important is that 3.7 percent of Ghanaians have not decided.,”the survey mentioned .

In an interview with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Ekourba Gyasi, Dr. Isaac Owusu Mensah, Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon, explained that the research conducted by the University showed that the “skirt and blouse” vote pattern was imminent.

According to him, one of such constituencies is the Hohoe constituency, where the NPP’s candidate, Peter Amewu, for the first time won the Parliamentary elections.

Asked the effect of a “skirt and blouse” elections to  Parliament,  Dr. Isaac Owusu Mensah, mentioned that the development will push government to work hard especially in constituencies it lost.

“ The new development will ensure that both Majority and Minority Members of Parliament form consensus and work together. The parties always have difficulties in building consensus and so this Parliament will afford government the opportunity to form a consensus. The skirt and blouse parliament will keep government on its toes and ensure that work is done effectively,” he added.
