Some parents think their wards with aggregate 35 did better than those 6 – GES Pro

re-opening

The Head of Public Relations, Ghana Education Service (GES), Cassandra Twum Ampofo, has underscored the need to educate the parents about the grading system and, as a matter of fact, how it works as far as school placement is concerned.

According to her, some parents think when their children have higher numbers, like 35 or 40, they have performed better than those with single numbers.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) recently released the 2023 academic calendar for all government schools.

For double-track students in Form 3 [three] who opened schools on January 10, 2023, the GES noted that they will go on break between April 6–16, 2023, and return on April 17, 2023.

The students will then go on another break between June 2–8, 2023. They will resume on June 9 and stay in schools up to September 15, 2023, to end the academic year for the first term.

The school reopened on February 20th for new form one students. However, some of them are still doing self-placement in schools.

In the process, it was seen recently, especially on social media, that some parents were complaining that their children had double numbers but did not have their choice of school, questioning the GES over the school placement process.

Speaking on this on Atinka TV with Abena Dufie, Cassandra Twum Ampofo said, “One thing I think we have to address is the understanding of the grades, because I saw some parents who came there and were angry that their children had 35, 40 but they did not get school, questioning why someone had 6 and had a school.”

She continued, “Due to this, I think when we are doing the school selection, we have to get the parents to understand the grading system.” “It looks like they feel when you have a higher number, you have really performed, but when you get a single number, you haven’t.”
