Women must fully participate in economic, political and social life- Kamala Harris

The Vice President of the United States of America (USA), Kamala Harris, has stated that women around the world must be able to fully participate in economic, political and social life.

She said women must also be able to participate equally, including leadership roles, adding that it was a key to maximising global growth and opportunity.

Despite her belief, she observed that there are gender disparities around the world, including the United States.
She therefore underscored the need to address gender disparities in the world.

Kamala Harris made the remarks at Accra’s Black Stars Square on March 28, 2023, as part of her activities during her visit to Ghana.

She observed that on the continent of Africa, women grow the majority of the food, yet, they are less likely to own the lands they farm.

She noticed that women represent a majority of the frontline health workers but face disparities of health outcomes.
Kamala Harris observed that most Women are entrepreneurs, yet have limited access to capital and markets.
Although women are peace makers and bridge builders, she also noticed that they continue to be unrepresented at the tables where decisions are being made.

“There are many factors that impact a woman’s ability to survive and thrive, and one of those is economic empowerment and when we lift up the economic status of a woman, let us be clear, we lift up the economic status of her children, her family, her community, the entire economy benefits,” she said.

She added , “So now that the United States of America will work alongside our partners, each and everyday to close gender gaps here and around the world, and ultimately, our belief is that the empowerment of women is rooted in the concept of freedom, not just freedom from violence or wants but freedom to create one’s own future, a freedom we desire from all people.”
