The 2022 budget statement was on Friday rejected by the country’s Parliament after a heated debate.

The rejection was made possible after all 137 Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) voted against the motion on Friday while members of the Majority Caucus had abandoned their seats in protest against alleged bias on the part of the Speaker of Parliament Prior to the crucial voting, the Speaker had called for a head count to establish if the House had form a quorum in order to proceed.

All members of the Minority Caucus proceeded to reject the 2022 budget when the question on the motion for the approval of the budget was put out.

But on Tuesday, the budget was approved by the Majority in the absence of the Minority.

While in parliament to make further deliberations on the 2022 budget, the Minority suggested that the budget’s approval be reversed.

Christmas party moves to Zoom

0

We’ve been hearing a lot about Christmas parties today and whether companies should host them this year.

A UK minister who says it is up to individual businesses to decide whether to have a Christmas party this year says he has cancelled his own.

Science minister George Freeman earlier told LBC Radio: “I can tell you that my parliamentary team and I normally have a Christmas party.

“We’ve decided this year that it is probably sensible to do it by Zoom and wait for the spring. It won’t be the best party in the world.

“But… we don’t want to be telling every individual business what they should or shouldn’t be doing. It is a matter for them.”

It comes after the prime minister and health secretary said there was no need to cancel Christmas parties.

Sir Martin Sorrell, of advertising agency S4Capital, is urging the government to offer clear guidance to businesses who he says are seeing a “sharp series of cancellations” in Christmas parties since the emergence of the Omicron variant.

Mandatory vaccination in Germany may be only way out – ICU doctor

Mandatory vaccinations may be needed to combat the spread of Covid cases in Germany, an ICU doctor tells the BBC.

Chancellor Angela Merkel says a vaccine mandate could be imposed from February next year, if approved by parliament.

Dr Hans Bodeker, a hospital consultant in Dresden, Saxony – which has the highest infection rate in the country – says a rise in hospitalisations is being driven by unvaccinated people. The surge has made him change his mind about forced vaccinations.

“If you had asked me a few weeks ago, I would have said no I don’t want that. [But] at the moment I think it’s the only way to get out of the situation is vaccinating, vaccinating, and probably it needs to be mandatory to heighten rates,” he tells the BBC World Service’s OS programme.

Bodeker says scepticism about the government and mainstream media is making young people unsure about getting jabbed.

“People are living in their social media bubble – and they think the danger is coming not from the virus but from the vaccination. It’s horrible.”Article share tools

Norway announces new restrictions after Omicron found

Norway has announced strict new Covid measures in Oslo and nearby areas after a suspected cluster of Omicron cases was found in the capital.

People have been ordered to wear masks in public places and work from home where possible. Travellers arriving in Norway must do a Covid test within 24 hours of arrival.

The measures come as officials raise alarm over a possible Omicron cluster among dozens of people who attended a Christmas dinner in the capital.

Up to 50 people who were at the event have since tested positive, and at least one of them has the new variant, city officials say. If the new strain is detected among all of them, it would be the one of the largest known outbreaks of the new variant in Europe.

“What Ghanaians are saying is that even if you want to do E-levy, look at the numbers, this is what we are trying to say. The way to go is not fighting, the way to go is to dialogue, the way to go is to negotiate,” he added.

Maturity needed to stop chaos in parliament- MP

0

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkoranza South, Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum says it will only take maturity to stop the back and forth chaos that is happening in parliament over the 2022 budget and other important matters that need to be voted on.

Although he admitted that such chaotic scenes do not occur only in Ghana, he said there has to be some level of maturity in the Ghanaian parliament where people will sit down, negotiate and dialogue and come out with a decision.

There was chaos in parliament on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 after First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Wusu ruled in favour of the NPP following Minority’s motion to set aside Tuesday’s 2022 budget approval.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum admitted that Ghanaians are not happy about the continuous fight that has been going on in parliament.

He noted that the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah had written that the Majority were ready for negotiations with the opposition, saying that is the type of maturity needed to solve issues.

“When we have such a situation, it is not about fighting, it is not about disrespecting the minority, it is not about going to say whatever you want to say, it is not about counting the Speaker sitting in his chair as another person, and it is not going to happen to only NDC now. One day the table will turn and this decision is not what our democracy is expecting,” he said.

Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum added that, “Our democracy is expecting that people should sit down maturely, dialogue, negotiate, understand whatever. They should go back to the table and look at whatever the people of Ghana are expecting from their members of parliament and this is the level that people should be championing.”

Child marriage to end by 2030

South Sudan’s government has promised to end child marriages by 2030 in line with the African Union’s campaign to achieve this goal on the continent by then.

Paramount chiefs from 10 regional states and the three administrative areas are meeting in the capital, Juba, for the second national conference on ending child marriages.

Among the proposals suggested at the conference include one from the Swedish ambassador Joachim Waern for a law criminalising child marriages.

South Sudan is one of 40 countries in the world with the highest rates of child marriages. A survey conducted in 2010 found that about 7% of girls marry before the age of 15, and 40% before the age of 18.

South Sudan’s gender ministry says only 6.2% of girls in South Sudan complete primary school, with one out of five dropping out of secondary school due to pregnancies.

Those most affected are between the ages of 15 of 19 years.
