Dagbon Overlord lauds National Best Farmer

0

The Overlord of Dagbon, Ndan Ya-Na Abukari II, has praised the National Best Farmer for 2021, 44-year-old Alhaji Mohammed Mashud, who hails from Mion District in the Northern Region.

He said the award was for the people of Dagbon, thus urging the youth in Dagbon township and the country as a whole to emulate the achievement of the national best farmer.

“This award is for the people of Dagbon, and we call on the youth of Dagbon especially, and Ghana in general to emulate him.”

Ya-Na Abukari II made the commendation when the Minister of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), Dr Akoto Owusu Afriyie, called on him at his Gbewa Palace in Dagbon in the Northern Region yesterday. Dr Akoto Owusu Afriyie is on a week-tour of the five regions in northern Ghana, and it forms part of phase three of his annual agricultural tour across the country.

Ya-Na Abukari II assured the agriculture minister of the Dagbon Traditional Council’s readiness to work with MoFA to ensure that the government’s vision for the agriculture sector is achieved.

He also applauded the government for its Fertiliser Improvement Policy, expressing his delights at the enormous benefit to farmers in Dagbon.

While congratulating the minister’s re-appointment, Ya-Na Abukari II lamented that northern Ghana was still lagging behind when it comes to development, noting that it was sad that a greater percentage of their arable lands were left with less attention in terms of usage.

“I know your re-appointment was purely on merit through your good works for mother Ghana, particularly your excellent performance at the ministry for the past four years,” the Overlord of Dagbon noted.

For his part, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Akoto Owusu Afriyie, said his visit was part of his annual tour of all the 16 regions to interact with stakeholders in the sector.

“I am on a working tour of the five regions to ascertain the progress of government’s continuous projects in the agriculture sector,” he said.

According to him, the five regions in northern Ghana (Northern Savannah, North East, Upper East & West) were very important when it comes to his portfolio as the agriculture minister.

He gave the assurance that he will continue to ensure that the needed infrastructures and projects to alleviate poverty and boost the country’s agriculture were in place.
“Let me also congratulate the National Best Farmer who happens to hail from Mion District in the Northern Region,” he expressed.

In the estimation of Dr Akoto Owusu Afriyie, the amount of resources allocated to the agriculture sector by the Akufo-Addo administration cannot be matched since independence, adding that this has made Ghana to become the “food basket of Africa.”

On the SAPID which is funded by African Development Bank, he stated that this project aims to absorb the youth into the agriculture sector in the five regions.
“We have picked Savannah Investment Programme (SIP) to promote livestock’s farming in the country, especially in the northern regions,” he said.

Touching on One District, One Dam (1D1D), the agriculture minister said this will help promote farming during the dry season, adding that building warehouses specifically eight to store surplus of farm products was on course.

The minister’s one-week tour will take him to Northern, North East, Upper East, Upper West and Savannah Regions, and it will afford him the opportunity to engage farmers to know their performances and challenges.

We want them to reduce fuel prices for us so that our work can go on.”

Despite the back and forth with government, they decided to embark on the sit down strike because government had failed to meet their demands.

On Monday morning, it was observed that most of the commercial drivers, although at their various stations did not move their vehicles; most of them were in red arm band to register their plight.

For the passengers, most of them had to either walk and join private cars to their places of work.

We oppose singling out African countries for Covid-19 travel bans – Akufo-Addo

0

“We repeated our firm opposition to all attempts to single out African countries for the imposition of travel bans, as instruments of immigration control, when we are told, for example, that the omicron variant of COVID-19, which was recently sequenced and reported by South African scientists, was discovered much earlier in the Netherlands”.

These were the words of the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, when he addressed a joint press conference at Jubilee House, with the President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa, on Saturday, 4th December 2021, as part of a 2-day visit to Ghana by the South African leader.

The President’s comments follows the decision by the US, UK and EU to bar entry to travellers from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Egypt, Mozambique, Malawi and Nigeria, following the discovery of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

Addressing the media, President Akufo-Addo indicated that he exchanged views and information with President Ramaphosa about the common fight against COVID-19, adding that “I reiterated Ghana’s unflinching support to South Africa and, indeed, to all other African countries, in the common search for an end to the pandemic”.

He told the media that the purpose of the visit by the South African President is to re-affirm the ties of co-operation and the bonds of friendship between the two countries, with the two leaders discussing at length how to boost further political and economic relations, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, as well as cooperation at the continental and multilateral levels.

Their deliberations also centered on driving investment opportunities, domestic and foreign, into both countries, the realization of the 17 SDGs, and the need for enhanced co-operation and partnership in the areas of education, trade and industry, agriculture, defence co-operation, immigration, environment, science and technology, petroleum and hydrocarbon activities, and tourism.

Whilst thanking President Ramaphosa and South Africa for the supporting Ghana’s bid for the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council, President Akufo-Addo reiterated that “Ghana will make sure that Africa’s voice is heard loud and clear in the deliberations of the Security Council, both on matters affecting the continent and on global issues, and we will consult broadly to define Africa’s interests”.

He continued, “With the continent confronted by multiple threats to the territorial integrity of some of its states, and many of its civilian populations being put under serious threat, President Ramaphosa and I both agreed that now is not the time for the Security Council to reduce its peacekeeping mandates on the continent”.

President Akufo-Addo applauded President Ramaphosa for the efforts he is making to consolidate the peace in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), with the ongoing SADC mission to crush the violent insurgency in Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado, in which South African troops are playing a leading role.

“We, in ECOWAS, have much to learn from this, in our own fight against the terrorist threat in the Sahel. President Ramaphosa expressed great interest in this fight, and pledged the support of SADC to ECOWAS within the context of the AU,” he said.

Such co-operation, he added, between regional bodies is important for ridding the continent of all the anti-democratic elements who have surfaced, and are seeking to destabilise and threaten the peace and security of Africa, and compromise the efforts at realising “The Africa we Want”, as enshrined in AU Agenda 2063.

The President added that “Ghana is determined to deepen her democratic governance, strengthen her institutions of accountability, and put her economy on a strong platform for rapid development. The vision remains that of a Ghana Beyond Aid, a self-reliant Ghana that has freed herself from a mindset of dependence, aid, charity and handouts, and is determined to make intelligent, disciplined use of her considerable resources the basis for her growth and prosperity.”

He reassured President Ramaphosa that Ghana will continue to collaborate with South Africa to find solutions to challenges such as the eradication of widespread poverty, elimination of irregular migration, insecurity and human rights violations, terrorism and violent extremism, human and drug trafficking, piracy, as well as climate change and its attendant, negative impact on the environment and livelihoods.

We’ll continue to resist 1.75% E-Levy – Minority Caucus

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in Parliament has assured the public that it will continue to use every legitimate and lawful channel to resist the 1.75% E-Levy government is seeking to impose on the ordinary Ghanaian.

According to them, their position from the outset of the 2022 Budget debate has been that the 1.75% E-Levy government is seeking to impose is regressive, punitive and draconian, and that same must be suspended.

In a statement signed by Mr Muntaka Mubarak,
MP for Asawase and Chief Whip, the Minority caucus said it has vigorously championed this position in Parliament and in the media space to draw Government’s attention to their demands.

However, it noted that subsequent to their rejection of the Budget on 26th November, 2021, government has sought to engage the NDC Caucus in a series of discussions towards finding an amicable solution to the impasse.

Surprisingly, it stated that despite the good faith demonstrated by the NDC team recognising the importance of the Budget to the economy, business and households, the government side out-rightly rejected the Minoriry’s proposal for a revision of the E-levy leading to a breakdown of the discussions.

“We wish to state unequivocally that no concrete decision or agreement has been reached between government and the NDC Caucus in Parliament on this matter,” the NDC Caucus stated.

It added that, As we speak, government’s so-called concessions are unknown to us and we have no clear indication that they intend to seriously consider any of the proposals that have come up.”

Meanwhike, the NDC Caucus said under the circumstance, it will maintain its original position as stated earlier.

Let’s deal with waste in a sustainable, timeous manner- Dr Siaw Agyepong

0

Executive Chairman of Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, has made a clarion call for waste management to be dealt with in a sustainable and timeous manner in the local environments.

He said such an approach should be done based on lessons drawn from technological advancement, taking into consideration peculiar cultural settings of the various environments.

Dr Siaw Agyepong made the call when he delivered the keynote address while participating in the Planet Budapest 2021 Sustainability Expo and Summit at Budapest, Hungary on Thursday, December 2, 2021.

It was on the theme: “Waste Management – Recycling, Burning or Exporting Rubbish.”

According to him, achieving such a “laudable objective” calls for a proper waste management system which must be seen as a process and not “an action.

“A sustainable, integrated process should include but not limited to collection, treatment, recovery, recycling, disposal systems, financing models, operational models, technologies, and citizen engagement programmes,” he proposed.

The quest for sound waste management, Dr Siaw Agyepong pointed out, must be seen as a global human endeavour.

He buttressed this by quoting Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which stipulates that “everyone has the right to life” and Article 25 states among other things that “everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for his health and well-being and that of his family”.

While admitting that many countries still resort to poor disposal of waste, he stressed that it can also not be denied that the world has been provided today with three waste alternatives — recycling, burning and exporting rubbish.

To attain sustainable and integrated waste management, the executive chairman of JGC indicated that waste must first be seen as a resource and not waste.

“My humble submission (which I believe you all share) is that, waste must not be seen as the undesired end-result of human activities, but as a resource which can be employed for diverse purposes. It offers trends and provides opportunities toward our pursuit of a better world,” he noted.

He was, therefore, happy that societies were progressively moving away from simply seeing waste as a bad end-product to a resource.

“Recent developments in some geographical areas, for instance, confirm that “pollution is, after all, a winnable battle”. This is a most welcome indication of a change in perception and resolve,” he said.

In the case of Africa, Dr Siaw Agyepong said solid waste especially, is projected to grow to 244 million tonnes per year by 2025 on the continent

This, he indicated, has seen the African Union (AU) call on African governments to commit to recycling at least 50 per cent of their urban waste they generate by 2023 and to grow urban waste recycling industries.

“As a group, the African Union sees proper waste management as being central to ensuring human and ecosystem health, and this provides economic and environmental benefits. While significant efforts are being made across Africa to ensure better access and services, many places still have inadequate infrastructure for efficient waste management,” he said.

On waste management situation in Ghana, Dr Siaw Agyepong contended that successive governments have been keen on dealing with the waste menace.

“In 1999, Ghana first published its Sanitation Policy which was later updated in 2010. A strategic ‘National Environmental Sanitation Strategy and Action Plan’ was enacted and this included an investment plan to ensure the achievement of the policy,” he recounted.

In spite of all these good policies, he underscored that Ghana lacks the requisite financial resources to support the full implementation of these policies which has brought in its wake some challenges in the disposal of waste.

According to him, it was in the midst of these challenges that Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of JGC, introduced modern technology to revolutionise the sanitation industry.

The efforts of Zoomlion, he noted, has led to a paradigm shift from carting waste for burning or burial to the use of simple modern collection processes and dumping at landfill sites.

He said JGC through Zoomlion has ensured the effective and timely collection of waste thereby reducing littering and indiscriminate dumping; crude dumping; and burning of waste.

This, he said, has helped largely to mitigate and divert uncontrolled Greenhouse Gas emissions which worsen climate change.

He used the opportunity to highlight some of the accomplishments of Zoomlion. Among these, he said, included the tricycle concept, composting and recycling, plastic recycling, liquid waste treatment and 1 Million Bin Concept.

He said Zoomlion has also been collaborating with the academia in the pursuit of a sustainable environment while creating job opportunities for people.

“Hence, we have partnered the following universities: University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Harvard School of Public Health, the Harvard Centre for African Studies (on whose Board I am privileged to serve) among other academic institutions to bring about innovations in our efforts in ensuring a sustainable future,” he mentioned.

Captain Smart released but his employers point to ‘creeping intolerance’

Media General, operators of Accra based Onua TV and Onua FM have disclosed that, their employee, Captain Smart, has been granted bail.

Smart was picked up on Thursday for allegedly making statements that threaten the peace and stability of the country.

On his TV morning show on Thursday, Smart said soldiers should have taken over Parliament during Wednesday’s chaos in the house and added he would support any form of uprising in the country due to the mismanagement of the country by ” 419″ President Akufo-Addo.

A police statement later confirmed his arrest adding that the controversial media personality was being charged for the “offence of offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace as provided under section 207 of the Criminal Act, 1960 (Act 29).”

However, a statement issued by Media General on Thursday Night indicated that Smart had been released but suggested that their employee was a victim of the creeping intolerance against journalists in the country.

Read full statement below:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CAPTAIN SMART RELEASED
ACCRA, Thursday, December 2, 2021

The Nima Divisional Police Command today arrested broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as “Captain Smart”, the host of the morning show “Onua Maakye” on Media General subsidiaries, Onua TV and Onua FM.

At about 11am on Thursday, Smart received officers from the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) in his home who invited him to their office, to which he obliged. He was subsequently taken to the Nima Police station in Accra for interrogation.

At the Nima Police Station, Smart was cautioned on the “offence of offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace as provided under section 207 of the Criminal Act, 1960 (Act 29).” He provided a caution statement and then was granted bail.

According to the Police, the arrest of Captain Smart was due to some unsavoury pronouncements he was alleged to have made that, according to them, hinged on the peace and security of the country.

However, Media General believes that the statement made by Captain Smart should not be one that should be interpreted in the manner that the Police did and also to add that we are increasingly concerned about the new trend of arrest of journalists and media practitioners.
This recent trend of picking journalists has affected journalists who work with Media General who are simply doing their work and, like every Ghanaian, should be protected by the Constitution.

Today’s arrest and detention of Captain Smart is by no means an isolated incident, but just one more egregious example of the intolerance increasingly creeping into the Ghanaian society. We are convinced that a careful review of the entire statement made by Captain Smart would reveal that it did not amount to threats to the peace and or stability of the country as claimed by the Ghana Police.

The Media General Group would like to urge the Ghana Police Service and the IGP to exercise restraint in their dealings with journalists legitimately doing their work and dismiss these broad charges so that press freedom would be protected.

We at Media General shall continue to preach and exercise responsible journalism. However, we would continue to empower our journalists and broadcasters to be fearless, honest and forthright in their professional outlook always.
