Highlife legend, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley who granted an interview on Atinka tv’s Saturday entertainment show “Entertainment City” said that, Daddy Lumba and Kojo Antwi are not highlife musicians.
The highlife musician made the comment after watching a compiled video of highlife musicians from the beginning of highlife till date, which also included Daddy Lumba and Kojo Antwi, prior to the topic of the show, “Highlife music and the way forward”.
“In reality, Daddy Lumba is not a highlife musician, but sings in Twi to disco beats and terms it Highlife while Kojo Antwi is also just a Reggae musician who also sings in Twi and terms it Highlife” he told Nana Adwoa, the host of the show.
He explained, "Highlife beats, rhythm and backup musicians make the genre and therefore, if we are going to import some beats and sing some songs in Twi and term it a highlife song, then we are spoiling our genre of music".
He added, what he does is real Highlife, even with his rap, because rap doesn’t change the genre of music.
He endorsed Bisa Kdei of being a real Highlife musician among his peers.
He finally advised that, young Highlife musicians, should learn from their predecessors because they are willing to teach as long as they are serious.
