Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that the final batch of Ghanaians being evacuated from South Africa is expected to arrive in Ghana on Sunday, August 16.
He said the government is undertaking two more rounds of evacuation, with the final exercise scheduled for Sunday.
According to the Minister, about 500 Ghanaians who initially chose to remain in South Africa became stranded after the situation deteriorated and subsequently sought refuge at branches of the Church of Pentecost.
The Church of Pentecost hosted the 500 Ghanaians for more than two months, providing them with shelter, food and other support.
A major branch of the church in Johannesburg is still hosting some Ghanaian nationals who are expected to be evacuated on Sunday.
Mr Ablakwa, speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, commended the Church of Pentecost for its humanitarian support, noting that the church had also provided similar assistance to Ghanaians during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
He said the completion of the evacuation on Sunday would allow the affected church branches to return to their normal activities and services.
