The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across the region to immediately activate emergency response measures following severe flooding caused by heavy rains.
In a statement issued on June 29, 2026, the Minister expressed deep concern over the widespread flooding that affected several communities across the Greater Accra Region, extending her sympathies to residents who have suffered losses and assuring them of the government’s support.
“The Government stands with all affected residents during this difficult period and remains committed to ensuring their safety and well-being,” the statement said.
Emergency Response Activated
As part of the emergency measures, all MMDCEs have been instructed to deploy emergency response teams without delay.
The Minister also directed officers of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other technical personnel to intensify rescue operations, evacuate residents trapped by floodwaters where necessary, conduct rapid damage assessments, and provide immediate relief to affected communities.
According to the statement, MMDCEs are expected to remain actively engaged until the flooding situation is fully brought under control.
Agencies Working Together
The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council said it is collaborating closely with key emergency response agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant institutions to coordinate rescue operations and safeguard lives and property.
The coordinated response aims to ensure timely interventions in flood-hit communities while minimising further risks to residents.
Public Urged to Exercise Caution
With more rainfall forecast, the Regional Minister urged residents to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to safety guidelines.
The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, remain indoors where possible, and stay away from flood-prone areas, open drains, and fast-flowing floodwaters.
Parents and guardians have also been urged to ensure that children do not play in floodwater or attempt to cross flooded roads and drains.
