Veteran Ghanaian football coach J.E. Sarpong believes an African nation has the potential to win the FIFA World Cup in the future, but insists the continent is still years away from achieving that feat due to tactical shortcomings.
Speaking on Atinka TV’s Entertainment Lounge with Roman Fada, Sarpong said the biggest challenge facing most African national teams is their lack of defensive organisation.
“It’s possible an African team can win the World Cup, but not now—not even in the next 15 years. Almost all the African teams lack proper defensive organization,” he stated.
The experienced coach noted that while Africa continues to produce exceptionally talented footballers, national teams must improve their tactical discipline and defensive structures to compete consistently with the world’s football powerhouses.
Sarpong also shared his thoughts on coaching Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, dismissing the notion that it is an exceptionally difficult role.
“It’s not difficult to coach a senior national team (Black Stars),” he remarked.
According to the veteran tactician, success at the national team level depends largely on effective leadership, tactical preparation, and the ability to manage players and build a united team.
His comments add to the ongoing conversation about the development of African football and the steps needed for the continent to become a genuine contender for the FIFA World Cup.
