The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has called on Regional and Sector Commanders of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to strengthen coordination, professionalism and leadership in addressing emerging migration and national security threats.

Speaking at the Ghana Immigration Service Regional Commanders’ Conference held at the GIS Centre of Excellence in Odorkor, the Minister stressed that no security institution can operate effectively in isolation, underscoring the importance of command synergy in achieving operational success, institutional discipline, accountability and sustainable growth.

Addressing participants under the conference theme, “Strengthening Command Synergy for Sustainable Growth,” Muntaka said the focus of the meeting is timely in light of the growing challenges posed by irregular migration, human trafficking, transnational crime, terrorism and cyber-enabled threats.

He urged commanders to foster greater collaboration across all levels of the Service, noting that coordinated leadership remains critical to safeguarding Ghana’s borders and responding effectively to evolving security concerns.

The Interior Minister also commended the Comptroller-General and the management of the Ghana Immigration Service for prioritising staff welfare, logistics enhancement and infrastructure development.

He described these initiatives as essential to building a motivated, well-equipped and efficient workforce capable of delivering on the Service’s mandate.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the Ghana Immigration Service, Muntaka pledged continued support to improve the Service’s operational capabilities and working conditions.

He also expressed appreciation to immigration officers for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting Ghana’s borders and contributing to national peace and development.

The Minister further charged Regional and Sector Commanders to lead with integrity, fairness and discipline while using the conference as an opportunity to share experiences, exchange ideas and develop practical solutions to improve the Service’s operations.

The three-day conference features presentations on strategic leadership, command and control, strategic management and finance, disciplinary procedures under L.I. 2245, and 360-degree leadership, all aimed at enhancing the capacity of commanders.

In his welcome address, Comptroller-General of Immigration, Samuel Basintale Amadu, emphasised that discipline remains central to the success of the Ghana Immigration Service.

He noted that Regional and Sector Commanders play a pivotal role in ensuring effective border management and maintaining the operational effectiveness of the Service.

The conference is expected to strengthen leadership within the Ghana Immigration Service and equip commanders with the knowledge and strategies needed to address contemporary migration and security challenges while enhancing institutional performance.
