The Borla Taxi and Tricycle Operators in Accra say they will increase their waste collection charges due to the high cost of operations.
The announcement was made on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie by Max H. Jumbo, General Secretary of the Borla Taxi and Tricycle Association.
Mr. Jumbo blamed the crisis on poor waste management infrastructure in the capital. “As we speak, only one dumping site is serving Accra, compared to the 17 operational sites the city had in 2023,” he said.
He added that most Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in Ghana are not giving waste management the attention it deserves, a situation he said is forcing operators to spend more on fuel and time to dispose of waste.
The Association’s General Secretary also linked the waste problem to Accra’s persistent flooding. According to him, poor waste disposal and indiscriminate development are major human causes of the floods.
“We collect your waste to protect public health. Respect our work and the people behind it,” Mr. Jumbo appealed, urging the public and authorities to support waste workers.
