The Ghana Armed Forces has officially launched Exercise Storm Shield 2026, a large-scale joint internal security and counter-insurgency field training exercise aimed at enhancing the operational readiness of troops to tackle terrorism and other emerging security threats.

The exercise, taking place within the Northern Command Area of Responsibility, is designed to equip military personnel with the skills, coordination, and rapid response capabilities needed to confront contemporary security challenges, particularly threats linked to Violent Extremist Organisations (VEOs).
In a statement shared on its official social media platforms on Tuesday May 19,2026, the Ghana Armed Forces said the exercise is intended to strengthen the ability of troops to respond swiftly and effectively to incidents that could threaten national peace and stability.

The military noted that the training forms part of broader efforts to maintain security across the country, especially in northern Ghana and border areas where concerns over extremist activities in the sub-region remain a growing focus.
Photos released from the opening phase of the exercise showed hundreds of soldiers assembled in formation, tactical military vehicles positioned on the training grounds, and senior military officers inspecting troops and interacting with personnel. Other images captured moments of camaraderie among soldiers participating in the exercise.

The drills are expected to test troop endurance, operational coordination, intelligence gathering, field combat readiness, and joint security response strategies under simulated conditions.
Military authorities believe such exercises are critical in preparing troops to effectively manage modern-day security threats and safeguard the country’s territorial integrity.

Exercise Storm Shield 2026 also highlights the Ghana Armed Forces’ continued commitment to improving professionalism, operational efficiency, and inter-agency collaboration in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
