A woman reportedly collapsed after witnessing the demolition of her shop during the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s (KMA) ongoing exercise to remove unauthorized temporary structures around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The demolition exercise, which was carried out with the support of military personnel, targeted temporary structures that the Assembly says were erected without approval or failed to meet the required planning specifications.
The operation forms part of KMA’s efforts to restore order around the stadium, enhance public safety, and enforce compliance with the city’s planning regulations.
When Atinka News visited the scene, emotional scenes unfolded as excavators pulled down several structures. The affected woman reportedly lost consciousness while watching her shop being demolished and was assisted by bystanders before receiving attention as the exercise continued.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has maintained that it issued several eviction notices to affected property owners before the exercise and held engagements with traders and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth and lawful process.
The Assembly has also advised owners of demolished structures to remove any remaining valuables from the site as the exercise continues.
