President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Finance to immediately release GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency flood relief and mitigation efforts following severe flooding in parts of Accra and other communities in southern Ghana.
The directive, announced on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, forms part of the government’s response to the widespread flooding caused by hours of unusually heavy rainfall.
According to a statement from the Presidency, GH¢150 million of the allocation will be used to provide immediate relief to individuals and communities affected by the floods, while the remaining GH¢150 million will finance flood mitigation measures aimed at reducing the risk of future flooding.
As part of the emergency response, President Mahama has also directed the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency agencies in ongoing rescue and relief operations.
Earlier in the day, the President undertook an aerial assessment of the flood-hit areas to evaluate the extent of the damage and announced a series of interventions intended to protect residents and strengthen the country’s flood response efforts.
The government says the funding and deployment of additional security personnel underscore its commitment to providing immediate assistance to affected communities while implementing long-term measures to improve flood resilience.
