Ghana has expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the “only realistic and lasting basis” for resolving the long-standing Western Sahara dispute.
The position was contained in a joint communiqué issued following bilateral talks on Tuesday after the second session of the Ghana-Morocco Joint Cooperation Committee in Accra. Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita co-chaired the second session with Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest, while also providing an opportunity for discussions on regional and international issues.
Ghana also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which reiterates support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate negotiations aimed at reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution in line with the UN Charter.
According to the joint communiqué, Ghana considers Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the most practical framework for resolving the Western Sahara issue through dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations.
They also reaffirmed support for the United Nations-led political process to achieve a mutually acceptable resolution to the decades-old dispute.
The position aligns with growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal, which Rabat maintains offers a credible and sustainable path to ending the dispute while preserving the Kingdom’s sovereignty over the Sahara territory.
