Acting Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Gibril, has defended the economic policies of the Mahama administration while launching a sharp critique of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), arguing that Ghana would have faced greater economic challenges under its leadership during recent global geopolitical tensions.
Speaking in an interview on Atinka FM, Gibril referenced the recent Iran–U.S./Israel conflict, claiming the NPP would have struggled to manage the country’s economy amid the resulting global uncertainties.
“Imagine how Ghana’s economy would have fared under the NPP during the Iran–U.S./Israel conflict,” he said.
He also criticised the previous administration over what he described as misplaced priorities, alleging that political interests took precedence over critical infrastructure projects.
“You chose party T-shirts over the Afari Hospital project. That’s why the people voted you out,” he asserted.
On the government’s proposed 24-hour economy policy, Gibril dismissed suggestions that it would be an easy initiative to implement, stressing that it requires careful planning and competent leadership.
“The 24-hour economy is not a ‘give me steɛ’ initiative. It demands serious planning, capable minds, and hard work,” he stated.
Gibril maintained that the successful implementation of the policy would depend on strategic planning, institutional capacity, and sustained commitment to economic transformation.
His comments come as political debate continues over the government’s economic agenda and the implementation of the proposed 24-hour economy policy.
