Opong-Fosu Tops Informal Online Poll Ahead of NDC National Chairmanship Race

Hon. Akwasi Opong-Fosu has emerged as the leading candidate in an informal online poll conducted by Today.com.gh ahead of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairmanship contest.

According to the poll, which featured five declared contenders, Opong-Fosu secured 67.7% of the votes cast, placing him well ahead of the other aspirants.

Former Member of Parliament Nii Lante Vanderpuye followed with 19.8%, while former National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo polled 7.45%. Alhaji Sinare received 4.34%, with Chief Sofo Azorka recording 0.62%.

The publication noted that the poll is informal and reflects the views of its online readership rather than the preferences of the NDC’s voting delegates. As such, it should not be regarded as a scientific measure of support within the party.

Nevertheless, the results provide an early indication of public interest and visibility among the candidates as preparations for the internal contest gather momentum.

Opong-Fosu, who currently serves as Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), has held several senior public offices during his career. He has served as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Minister of State at the Presidency responsible for Development Authorities, Head of the Local Government Service, and Member of Parliament for Amenfi East.

He also served in various local government leadership roles under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and is a founding member of the NDC.

Internationally, Opong-Fosu has held leadership positions in organisations including United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG-Africa), United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the ACP Local Government Platform, and the United Nations Advisory Committee on Local Authorities.

The NDC National Chairmanship race is expected to attract significant attention as the party prepares for its next internal elections and positions itself for future electoral contests.

While the Today.com.gh poll offers an early snapshot of online public sentiment, political observers say the actual contest will ultimately be decided by the party’s delegates during the official election process.
