The Queen Mother of Akorvie Royal Divisional Clan in the Mepe Traditional Area in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, Mamaa Abla Antwiwaa II, has cautioned young women against wearing miniskirts in public, describing the practice as inconsistent with the area’s customs and values.
She made these remarks during a WhatsApp interview engagement hosted by the Mepe Reform Union, where she also appealed to parents to instil discipline and cultural values in their children from an early age.
According to the Queen Mother, parents have a responsibility to ensure that children show respect to elders and conduct themselves appropriately in society.
She urged parents to teach their children to respect all elders, not only members of their own families, saying this would help preserve the values of the community.
“We as mothers teach our children to respect any elderly person in society, not just their parents.” She said.
The Queen Mother also stressed that children within the Mepe Traditional Area must respect their traditions, customs and elders regardless of their background.
She further encouraged older members of the community to guide and advise the younger generation on acceptable behaviour.
Speaking on community values, the Queen Mother said certain forms of dressing, hairstyles and behaviour are regarded as signs of indiscipline within the traditional area.
She recalled that in the past, any elder who witnessed a child engaging in misconduct in public could discipline the child as a deterrent, regardless of family relations.
