President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to expanding Ghana’s oil refining capacity as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s energy sector, enhance energy security, and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Phase Two expansion of the Sentuo Oil Refinery, President Mahama said the project would significantly increase Ghana’s local refining capacity while creating jobs and positioning the country as a major exporter of petroleum products within the West African sub-region.
According to the President, the expansion forms part of the government’s broader strategy to add value to Ghana’s petroleum resources and improve the country’s industrial and economic competitiveness.
The Phase Two project will increase the refinery’s processing capacity from 40,000 barrels of crude oil per day under Phase One to 100,000 barrels per day upon completion, representing a major boost to Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry.
President Mahama expressed confidence that the expanded refinery would help meet growing domestic fuel demand, reduce the country’s import bill, and enhance Ghana’s role as a regional hub for refined petroleum products.
He also noted that the project is expected to generate employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases while contributing to the country’s long-term economic growth and energy sustainability.
